JC gymnasts slip from top 20

An undefeated week was not enough to keep the Patriots in the state rankings.
Jay County High School’s gymnastics team slipped from the Indiana High School Gymnastics Coaches Association top 20 in the poll released Monday. They were 17th last week.
The Patriot gymnasts defeated Lincoln and Tri Jan. 17 with a score of 99.3 and topped Connersville a day later with 100.75 points. It will host Muncie Southside Thursday.
Valparaiso, the defending state champion, remains No. 1 after picking up 105 poll points. Bishop Dwenger is second with 98, and Columbus North ranks third.

EJ wrestlers roll
The East Jay Middle School wrestling team racked up eight pins Monday in a 56-33 victory over Winchester.
Luke Rowles (115), Philip Fox (120), Levi Hummel (135), Colton Compton (80), Kaleb Toland (145), Hunter Gillette (152), Michael Williamson (160) and Logan Antrim (HWT) all recorded pins for the Chiefs. Alex Abbott (100) won by a technical fall, and Matt Blackford (110) picked up a win by decision.

WJMS 8th falls
MONROE — The West Jay eighth grade boys basketball team, which has just two eighth graders, fell just short with a 31-29 loss to the host Flying Jets at Saturday’s Adams Central Tournament.
Nate Brackman led the squad with 15 points. Case Retter added six points, and Joey Spring scored five.


Sixth grade teams 2-1
Three Jay County sixth grade basketball teams were in action Monday with the East Jay boys and girls picking up wins of 36-5 and 27-21 respectively over St. Joe. The West Jay girls team fell 35-17 to Hartford City.
Jay Houck led the Chief boys (2-1) with eight points. Kyler Hudson and Ryan Burkett each added seven.
Alison Jutte finished with eight points as the EJMS girls improved to 4-0. Catera Gierhart scored five points.
Kyndal Miller had six points for the West Jay girls, and Samantha Back followed with four.
In B team games, Ivan Hemmelgarn scored six points to lead the East Jay boys to a 23-21 overtime win, Erica Kunkler had eight points in the East Jay girls’ 21-18 loss and Miller had eight points as West Jay topped Hartford City 24-12.

Franks leads in finale
Matthew Franks was the top performer Saturday as the Jay Community Center’s Boomer Basketball League finished off its season.
Franks racked up 36 points to lead Portland Insurance to the third/fourth grade boys championship in a 52-46 triple overtime victory. Seth Hogg had 34 points in pacing MainSource Bank in the pre-school/kindergarten division.
Other scoring leaders for championship teams were Clay Schmitz with 32, Elizabeth Reece and Ian Reynolds with 20 points apiece, Taylor Homan with 14 and Maggie Pryor with 10.[[In-content Ad]]
