JCHS gymnastics

NEW CASTLE — Pollsters take notice. Jay County is ready to see its name on your list.

The Patriot gymnastics team knocked off 15th-ranked New Castle Saturday as the Trojans hosted a four-team event.

Jay County, which finished behind New Castle at the Valparaiso Invitational Jan. 15, won with a score of 101.95. The Trojans were second at 101.2, followed by Blackford (80.15) and Muncie Southside (71.4).

It was an outstanding day for the Patriots, who posted the No. 9 score in school history, with Hannah Williams’ career-best all-around score leading a flurry of personal bests.

Williams posted a 36.3 in the all-around, beating out New Castle’s Haley Cook by nearly a full point. She won every event, posting the top overall score with a 9.5 on the floor exercise.

The junior also notched a 9.05 on the vault, scored a personal-best 8.9 on the uneven parallel bars and added an 8.85 on the balance beam. Her score on the bars places her fifth on Jay County’s all-time list.

Sophomore Kristin Brown was second to Williams on the floor with a 9.2, which is the fifth best score in Patriot history. It was a career-best mark, and her previous high score this year was an 8.35 Thursday in dual-meet action against Southside.

Senior Lacey Grider completed the second-best team floor score in school history with a personal-best 8.45 for a total of 27.15.

Senior Melissa Fifer and freshman Erika Hunt scored in a pair of events for the Patriots.

Fifer was second on the team and third overall with a 9.0 on the vault. She added a 7.75 on the balance beam.

Hunt posted an 8.10 on the vault and a 7.4 on the beam, both of which were good for Jay County’s No. 3 score.

Senior Makenzie Knight’s personal-best 8.0 on the bars was good for second on the team and third overall. It boosted the Patriots to the eight-best score in school history in that event.

Sophomore Lacey Thornburg added a 7.95 on the bars.

Junior varsity

Jay County won the junior varsity competition with 66.65 points. New Castle scored 58.5, and neither Blackford or Southside had complete JV teams.

Lacey Thornburg posted the top JV score for the Patriots, winning the floor exercise with a 7.65. Larissa Butcher took first on the balance beam with a personal-best 7.45, which would have been good for the No. 3 varsity score on the team.

Kendra Homan took care of the other two wins as Jay County swept all four events. She took the vault with a 7.45 and the uneven parallel bars with a 4.9.[[In-content Ad]]
