JC juniors to attend girls state (6/20/03)
Taking Note
Two Jay County juniors have been selected to attend Hoosier Girls State to be held June 22 to June 28 at the Indiana State University campus in Terre Haute.
Vanessa Wilkins, daughter of Mike and Joanie Wilkins, Portland, and Leslie Schwartzkopf, daughter of Dale and Bev Schwartzkopf, Portland, were chosen by the American Legion Post 211 Auxiliary.
The delegates will register to vote and will be assigned to a mythical political party which at the time of registration has no political organization, beliefs or platforms. Delegates will establish all of this within three days and will run for an elected office at the city, county or state level. Campaigns will then be run complete with materials and speeches. Once elected, office delegates will be sworn in and perform the duties of that postion. Non-elected delegates will be given appointments and be encouraged to visit the offices of the elected to communicate their needs as citizens.
The program is designed to educate participants on the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. It is a non-partisan, non-political government program.
FOOD DONATIONS
Local Sprint employees recently donated 1,414 pounds of food and equivalent cash during their recent Let’s Tackle Hunger food drive.
In addition to the Portland employees donating food, the Sprint Foundation matched the donation with a dime per pound and presented Community and Family Services, Portland, with a check for $141.
