JC netters draw Marion

Local roundup

MARION - The Jay County High School girls tennis team got a first-round bye in Monday's sectional draw.

The Patriots will play in the semifinal round of the tournament Friday at Marion at 4:30 p.m.

The tournament will open Thursday with the host Giants taking on Blackford at 4:30 p.m. The winner of that match will play the Patriots in one of Friday's semifinal matches at 4:30 p.m., and Madison-Grant and Mississinewa will meet in the other.

Jay County lost its regular-season match April 17 by a 5-0 score to defending champion Marion. It was scheduled to play Blackford as well, but that match was canceled because of rain.

The Patriots defeated Madison-Grant 4-1. They do not play Mississinewa during the regular season.

Softball tops Wes-Del

GASTON - The Jay County softball team was tied with the host Wes-Del Warriors after the fourth, fifth and sixth innings Monday. The Patriots came up big in the seventh to take a 10-7 victory.

JCHS (7-6) led 4-1 after two innings only to have the Warriors score four times in the bottom of the fourth to pull even. Both teams scored single runs in the sixth before the Patriots put up three in the top of the seventh and held Wes-Del scoreless in the bottom.

Laura Castillo powered Jay County, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs. Pazia Speed had three hits and two RBIs, and Brittany Mann scored twice and drove in two runs.

Selena McKibben had three hits, Jessica Piercey scored three times and Danielle Wellman added two RBIs.

Brittney Watson picked up the win, giving up one run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief. She struck out four batters.
