JC rallies to 8-0 (09/18/2008)

JCHS boys/girls soccer

The perfect season looked lost.

For the first time all year, the Patriots trailed by more than a single goal. They were blanked in the first half for just the second time this season, trailing 2-0.

But Bellmont still could not fight them off.

Jay County High School's boys soccer team rallied to keep its undefeated season alive Wednesday by defeating the host Braves 4-2.

The Patriot girls soccer team played at home against Bellmont Wednesday, falling 7-1.

The Braves built their first-half lead in the boys game with a couple of unconventional goals.

The first, less than a minute into the game, came from 40 yards out. The second came on a penalty kick after JCHS (8-0) was called for tripping inside the 18-yard box.

After going nearly 49 minutes without a score, freshman Aldo Castro and senior Isaac Poole got the Patriots going. Castro sent a high ball toward the far post, and Poole slid under the goalie to deflect it in at the 8:39 mark of the second half.

Patrick Johnson tied the game less than five minutes later when his corner kick hit the goalie in the back and ricocheted into the net. Midway through the second half Johnson made a crossing pass to Brad Horn, who scored to give Jay County the lead for good.

Senior Trey Dunn scored with less than seven minutes to go for the final margin.

Bellmont 7, Jay County 1

The Patriots lost 7-1 for the second straight game as they are still in search of their first win of the season.

Bellmont took control with three first-half goals before allowing Jay County to get on the board in the second half. The lone goal of the home team came on a penalty kick by Brianne Wellman, who led the Patriots (0-6-1) with six shots on goal.

Kaelee Keller, Shayla Gibbs and Lindsay Moser each took one shot for JCHS. Mollie May totaled 13 saves, and LeAnn Horn finished with eight.
