The home course has been good to the Patriots so far. And they’ll have a chance to take advantage of it for the rest of the season.
After playing its first 10 events of the year on the road, the Jay County High School girls golf team’s final seven are all at Portland Golf Club. They won the first of those Thursday against Richmond, and picked up a double victory Monday with a score of 194.
The Wapahani Raiders were second in the three-team event with a 206, and the Monroe Central Golden Bears shot 229.
In just her fourth event back with the team after a knee injury, senior Cara Garringer claimed medalist honors, edging teammate Abby Denney and Wapahani’s Kyla Tighe with a 44. Alex Crabtree had the best score for Monroe Central with a 49.
After struggling on the opening hole, Garringer bounced back with a par on the 260-yard, par-4 11th. She hit her third shot on the 420-yard, par-5 12th hole onto the right side of the green, left her first putt just short and then tapped in for a second straight par. She added another par on the 190-yard, par-4 16th hole and had bogeys on 14, 15, 17 and 18 to finish with the best score of the day.
Denney hit her first shot of the day even with the front of the green on the 289-yard, par-4 10th hole. She went on to the first two hole, and played even on the par-3 13th and 15th on the way to sitting at 3-over-par through seven holes with a chance to match her career-best score of 39.
But she got in some trouble late, finding the creek on No. 17 and the bunker on 18 as she came in with a 45.
Jay County’s No. 3 and 4 scorers each finished with one par on the day. Macey Gerber was even on the 465-yard, par-5 14th hole and bogeyed two of the final four on the way to a 51. Whitney Gray had a par on the 101-yard, par-3 13th hole and also had one bogey as she shot 54.
Brittany Stevens finished with a 57 for the Patriots, and Alysia Fennig shot 63.
The wins over the Raiders and Golden Bears pushed Jay County’s record to 7-1 in dual matches this year. The team is undefeated since dropping its season opener 178-185 to Anderson.
The Patriots have put together an impressive regular-season run over the last four seasons, with a combined record of 37-8. They set a school record for winning percentage by going 11-1 in 2007, and matched that effort in ’08.
With eight matches still remaining this season, Jay County has a chance to make a run at that mark as well as single-season wins record of 12 set in 1990.
In junior varsity play Monday, Cortney Myers shot 69 for the Patriots and Katlin Petro had a 70.[[In-content Ad]]
