JC runners finish 1st

The Jay County High School boys and girls track teams opened their respective seasons with wins Tuesday.
Jay County’s girls won in commanding fashion over Blackford and Muncie Southside. The Patriots scored 118 points. Blackford was second with 15, edging Southside, which scored 14 points.
The Patriot boys won with 79 points. Southside was second with 54, and Blackford scored 22 for third.
Eight Patriot girls won individual events, with Ciera Barcus (long jump, high jump) and Malarie Houck (100 and 300-meter hurdles) earning victories in multiple events.
Christina Easton (discus), McKensie Muhlenkamp (shot put), Kellie Fortkamp (3,200 run), Emma Laux (200 dash), Amber Huelskamp (400 dash) and Abbi Dunlavy (800 run) all won their respective events.
The Patriots swept the discus, high jump, shot put, and both hurdle events, while running uncontested in the 4x100 and 4x800 relays as well as the 3,200 run.
For the Patriot boys, Aaron Neal (200 run), Tyler Leonhard (800 run), Jalen Ryder (1,600 run), Andrew Trewyn (100 hurdles), Zane Shreve (300 hurdles), Andrew Eley (discus) and Wil Watson (shot put) all earned individual victories. The Patriots also placed first in the 4x400 relay.

Tribe rallies
FORT RECOVERY — The Indians have two wins on the season. Both of them have been come-from-behind victories.
The Fort Recovery High School baseball team scored three runs in the third inning to overcome an early two-run deficit and added an insurance run in the fifth to beat Arcanum, 4-2.
Elijah Kahlig sparked the Fort Recovery offense, hitting a two-run double in the home half of the third, scoring Mitch Stammen and Blake Boughman, who doubled and walked respectively. Jake Muhlenkamp followed Kahlig with an RBI single to give the Indians a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth, Cole Wendel, who recorded the save in 2 1/3 innings in relief of Kent Retz, reached on a single and advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. He then scored on a base hit by Boughman.
Wendel and Retz surrendered two hits apiece, and Retz struck out four, walked four and gave up two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work to earn the win.

Fort girls track wins
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery girls track team won its first meet of the year Tuesday over New Knoxville, 67-51.
The Tribe boys fell to the Rangers, 75-33.
Sierra Pugh won two individual events for the Indians, placing first in both the 100 and 200-meter dash.
Pugh teamed up with her sister Rachel, Bre Jutte and Jocelyn Kaiser to win both the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay races.
Elle Sutter (3,200 run), Alexis Hobbs (high jump and 300 hurdles), Kaiser (shot put) and Jutte (long jump) won their respective individual events.
Sutter also joined Grace Gehle, Angela Heitkamp and Rachel Kaup to win the 4x800 relay.
Issac Siegrist (3,200 run) and David Trobridge (200 dash) picked up wins for the Tribe boys.
Trobridge also teamed up with Rodney Hemmert, Chris Link and Caylen Rockwood to place first in the 4x100 relay.

SELECT win
The Indiana SELECT travel basketball went undefeated to win the Tournament of Champions on Saturday and Sunday at the Jay Community Center.
The SELECT, beat New Castle 39-36 to win the eighth grade division title following a defeat of the Indiana Outlaws, 38-25, in the semifinals.
They were bumped up a grade division after going undefeated in the seventh-grade division.
Team members are Shelby Caldwell, Maddie Lawrence, Gwen Omstead, Rhegan Shimp, Faith Wills, Dawn Minnick, Alison Hoening, Madison Beasley, Elizabeth Reece, Aubrey Shellabarger, Grace Bruns and Cassidi Qualls.[[In-content Ad]]
