It was quite a day for the Patriots and the Starfires at the Delta Invitational Saturday.
The Jay County girls cross country team won in the big-school division for the second straight year, while South Adams’ girls took the win in the small-school division. The Patriots outdistanced the host Eagles 34-40, while the Starfires held off the Winchester Golden Falcons 40-46.
The South Adams boys also won their small-school division race with 44 points, 12 ahead of second-place Winchester.
Alyssa Johnson and Nicole VanSkyock showed off a repeat of last season, finishing first and second for Jay County. Johnson crossed the line in 16:03, with VanSkyock 23 seconds back.
Allison Fullenkamp made it a triple threat for the Patriots, placing fourth in 16:54. She was followed by Jill Roughia in 13th in 17:30 and Jessica Mosier 14th in 17:40.
Lindsey Vesperry placed 32nd, and Vanessa Wilkins was 34th.
Haleigh Lehman took first place for South Adams, crossing the line in 15:52.
A trio of runners came in a pack for the Starfires next with Jamie Paul eighth in 17:35 followed by Whitney Sprunger in ninth and Katie Welch 10th. Lauren Tooley wasn’t far behind in 12th place, finishing with a time of 17:50.
South Adams’ boys didn’t manage to take first, but claimed the next three spots. Michael Lehman was second in 17:37, with Heath Lehman third in 17:54 and Tim Conrad fourth in 17:56.
Josh Sprunger placed sixth in 18:07, and Tyler Clemens was 29th with a time of 19:55.
The top finish from a runner on the Patriot boys team came from Josh Atkinson in 36th with a time of 20:41. He led a pack of four Jay County boys across the line with Nathan McClung next in 20:45, Paul Imel in 21:04 and Josh Selvey in 21:12.
Doug Murray rounded out the team scoring in 42nd, Josh Hawn was 43rd and Ian Shannon placed 45th.
Josh Shatto placed 26th for Jay County in the junior varsity race in 22:23 with Lucas Smith 30th and Josh Stultz 37th.
Jay County’s next action will come when it hosts the Jay County Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m. South Adams will host its invitational Saturday at noon.
Junior high
South Adams and Jay County finished back-to-back in first and second place in the junior high girls race.
The Starfires won with a score of 41, and the Chiefs had a score of 61. West Jay was fifth with 124.
South Adams was second in the eighth grade boys race with 57 points, one behind champion Rushville. East Jay placed fourth with 83.
West Jay finished fourth in the seventh grade boys race.
Leading the way for the eighth grade girls team for East Jay was Amanda Johnson in second place in 12:26. Amber Detro was sixth, Kylie Wellman placed seventh, Brianne Wellman was 17th and Cassandra Laux came in 30th.
South Adams got a third-place finish from Maddie Moore in 12:41, and Taylor Miller was right behind her in fourth. Kelly Weaver was the top West Jay runner in 14th in 13:17.
Adam McLaughlin paced the Starfires’ eighth grade boys team in second place in 10:36, and Edwin Clott had the top finish for the Chiefs in 11:33.
