JC softball defeats Indians

ANDERSON — Two big innings keyed the Jay County High School softball team Thursday in a 7-6 victory over the Anderson Indians.
Rachelle Jackson went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI to lead the Patriots (5-6), who scored three times in the third inning and four in the seventh. Nikka Chaney went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Chelsea Tighe had a single, two RBIs and a run.
Taylor Franklin finished with a hit, a run and an RBI, and Katlin Petro and Betsy Huffman also drove in runs for JCHS.
Chaney earned the victory as she went the distance and struck out four batters. She gave up six runs — five earned — on seven hits and two walks.
Track teams win
CONNERSVILLE — Jay County picked up a pair of victories over its former Olympic Athletic Conference rivals Thursday.
The boys team scored 62 points to edge Connersville (59), and Muncie Southside (42) finished third. The girls team scored 84 points while the host Spartans (72) finished second and Southside (seven) was third.
Zach Cash won the 300-meter hurdles for the Patriot boys in 42.4 seconds, and also teamed with Blake Crouch, Joe Imel and Darren Bogenschutz to take the 4x100 relay. Other individual wins came from Tyler Back (shot put – 44 feet, 6 inches), Karlos Harper (discus – 120 feet, 3 inches) and Cade Price (high jump – 6 feet, 2 inches).
Maria Murphy stayed perfect on the year in the throwing events for the JCHS girls, winning the shot put at 38 feet, 9 inches and the discus at 116 feet, 10 inches. Freshman Cierra Barcus took both the high jump and long jump at 5 feet, 1 inch and 15 feet, 6½ inches respectively.
Adding individual wins for the Patriots were Aly Miller (1,600 run – 5:53), Katie Simmons (800 run – 2:34) and Miranda Gerber (200 dash – 28.3).
JV baseball falls
The Patriots fell behind 8-0 Thursday as they slipped below .500 with an 11-2 loss to the visiting Delta Eagles.
Delta scored three times in the first inning and four in the second to take control.
Alex Dunn smacked a couple of triples and scored a run to lead Jay County (4-5). Blake Boughman was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Jon Lowe hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Hartzell leads victory
Keegan Hartzell paced Pak-A-Sak as it improved to 4-0 with a 16-13 victory Thursday over Williams Auto Parts in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.
Hartzell was 3-for-3 with a double and a triple while scoring three times and driving in a pair of runs. Zack Twigg added three hits, three runs and three RBIs.
Juan Pablo Wiggins had three hits and five RBIs for Williams.
