Jay County volleyball
PARKER CITY — It was a long night, but it was worth it.
Jay County rallied to win the final two games Thursday night to knock off the Monroe Central Golden Bears 21-25, 25-18, 26-28, 26-19, 15-10. It marked just the second win in a stretch of seven straight road matches for the Patriots, who will play in the Noblesville tournament Saturday before finally returning home Thursday to host Blackford.
Sophomore Shelby Rines pounded seven of Jay County’s 20 aces in the victory. She was one of three players with double-digit digs (11), and totaled eight kills.
Theresa Reinhart slammed home a team-high 17 kills to go along with nine digs. Markie Runyon added 14 kills.
Erica Clark notched 41 assists and 12 digs, and Ashley Horn led the Patriots (4-9) with 21 digs.
Junior varsity
Jay County also needed a comeback in the JV match as it rallied from a game-one loss for an 11-25, 25-17, 15-12 win over Monroe Central.
Stephanie Wellman posted six assists and four digs in the victory.
Lindsay Current also had four digs and added four assists.
The Patriots (4-6) got five kills apiece from Sarah Westgerdes and Julie Alig. Jessica Murdock finished with five digs.
Sharon Dirksen and Maria Miller powered the serving attack, notching six and four aces respectively.
West Jay
UNION CITY — Both matches were decided by narrow margins Thursday night as West Jay’s eighth grade team edged Union City Westside 25-23, 25-24 and the sixth and seventh grade team fell to a 25-18, 13-25, 15-13 defeat.
Amber McCowan had a big serving day for the eight grade squad, finishing with twice as many points as anyone else on the squad (12). Five of her points were scored on aces.
Keri VanSkyock also had five aces as she finished with six points. Brittney Muhlenkamp added four points, including three aces.
The sixth and seventh grade team got 11 points, including six in the game-two win, from Breanna Dahlstrom.
Talir Ellis added four points, and Mallory Levasseur had one kill.[[In-content Ad]]
