JC squad 5th at UCA camp

The Jay County High School varsity cheerleading squad finished fifth overall in the Universal Cheerleaders Association camp championships recently at the University of Kentucky.
The squad competed in the medium varsity division, for squads of 16 to 23, and also placed fourth in cheer. They earned blue ribbons and the spirit stick award in each day of evaluations at the camp, which included squads from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.
Seniors Megan Taylor, Ashley Caupp, Erin Hunt and Kristen Ainsworth earned the All-American Award, and Jordan McMillan, Melynda Brackman, Taylor and Hunt were invited to apply to become UCA instructors.
Other members of the squad include seniors Kyli Kelso and Alysia Mann, juniors Darian Barnett, Nikka Chaney, Jessi Chittum, Lyndee Evans, Mollie May, Nachelle Miller and Shelby Pryor, and sophomores Jenna Barber, Makayla Jobe and Lauren Runkle.
Two win titles
Both Portland Junior League baseball championship games were decided by wide margins Monday with Inman U-Loc rolling to a 14-5 victory over Geneva in Willie Mays and Geneva slamming Ponderosa 18-3 in Rookie.
Also Monday, Masonic Lodge earned a spot in the Major softball championship game by edging Portland Optimist 13-12 in the semifinal round.
Brendan McIntire scored three runs to lead Inman, which took control with a six-run second inning. Payton Heniser, Mitchel Frashier and Jason Minnich each added two runs.
Geneva picked up the Rookie title after building a 7-0 lead in the first inning. Collin Shaffer scored three runs, and Tim Hanna, Adam Beser, Cameron Pogue and Zaderick Fasnaugh each added two.
Gabby Hart finished with four RBIs and four runs, including the game-tying run in the sixth inning, for Masonic. Deanna Chenoweth walked and scored the game-winning run.[[In-content Ad]]
