The Patriots gave themselves a chance.
Although a double-victory and a opportunity to set the outright record was within place Monday, the Jay County High School girls golf team’s split with its former conference rivals at least gave it a chance to match the all-time wins mark.
JCHS posted a 195 at Portland Golf Club to finish behind Connersville (188) and ahead of Muncie Southside (233). The Patriots’ best score of the season is 185, and they shot 188 last week against Delta.
Cara Garringer set the pace for Jay County (10), which can match the single-season school record for wins tonight as it hosts Blackford and Southern Wells. The 1990 team set the record with a 12-2 season, and the winning percentage mark of .917 (11-1) came in 2007 and was tied again a year later.
Garringer came on strong on the third hole at PGC, recording her first par of the day on the 284-yard, par-4. She added a bogey on No. 4 and then notched back-to-back pars on the 349-yard, par-4 fifth and the 401-yard, par-5 sixth.
The senior added two more bogeys in the final three holes to lead the Patriots with a 44. She was just one stroke short of earning medalist honors as Connersville’s Kenzi Crutchfield finished with a 43.
The top score for Muncie Southside was Taryn Beckman with a 47.
Macey Gerber, who opened play on No. 9, had four bogeys in her first six holes and then matched Garringer’s effort with a par on the par-5 sixth. She finished with a 49.
Abby Denney struggled on the opening two holes before coming up with a par on No. 3. She followed with back-to-back bogeys, parred No. 6 and closed with consecutive bogeys for a 50.
Sophomore Whitney Gray turned in the final team score for the Patriots with a 52. After playing the eighth and ninth holes at 4-over-par, she came back with her first career birdie on the 275-yard, par-4 first hole.
She added a par on the 290-yard, par-4 dogleg fourth, and then bogeyed No. 6 on the way to a 52.
Brittany Stevens shot 59 for the Patriots, and Alysia Fennig finished at 61.
Jay County’s match at PGC tonight completes a run of seven straight events at home. It is their final match of the regular season before heading to Timber Ridge Golf Club in Bluffton for Saturday’s sectional tournament.
In junior varsity competition Monday, Cortney Myers turned in a 57 for the Patriots, and Katlin Petro shot 69.[[In-content Ad]]
