JC wrestlers ranked 16th

Local roundup

A pair of Patriots with plenty of tournament experience have their team ranked among the best in Indiana.
Jay County moved into this week’s Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Poll at No. 16. Perry Meridian leads the poll, which is based on projected scoring at the IHSAA state finals, followed by Merrillville and Yorktown.
Junior Eric Hemmelgarn and senior Kyle Garringer, who are both undefeated, are key to the Patriots’ place in the top 20 as they are both ranked in the top 10 in their respective weight classes.
Hemmelgarn, who finished third in the state last season, is ranked second in the heavyweight division. He is behind Perry Meridian’s Donte Winfield, who he pinned in the opening round of the state tournament a year ago.
Garringer, a three-time semi-state qualifier, is ranked sixth in the state at 195 pounds. Mitch Sliga of Fishers is No. 1.
Jay County has won each of its last two tournaments, taking the Delta Duals Saturday and the Spencer Haworth Invitational at South Adams on Dec. 1.
