JCC set to kick off program (10/09/07)

Taking Note

The Jay Community Center in Portland will begin a Learning, Fitness and Fun for Senior Citizens program in Jay County beginning Monday. The program will be for those 55 and older.

The event will begin with a kick-off breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Community Center.

Classes will begin after the breakfast and will include senior sneakers exercise classes, cornhole toss, ping pong, sing-a-long, flower arranging, beginning knitting, bridge, woodcarving, sharpen your mind with puzzles, chess and games and strengthen your core.

The classes will be held for five weeks and the cost of the program is $10. Registration deadline is Thursday. To register, call the JCC at (260) 726-6477.

Teen event

Teen Read Week will be held at Jay County Public Library Oct. 14 through Oct. 20 with the theme "LOL @ your library."

Teens may stop in the library each day to check out the "Joke of the Day."

There will also be a "Knock Knock Joke Contest." Jokes need to be submitted by Saturday, Oct. 13, and the winner will be chosen with a people's choice vote.

Humorous books will be available for checkout and will be displayed next to the circulation desk and teens may vote for their favorite books online.

Also during the month of October, teens may chat with authors each evening at www.readergirlz.com.

Gourd group

A gourd and gourd crafting group will meet in Ridgeville on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. The group will meet at the old Lions Club Building. Anyone with gourds or crafting supplies should bring them to the meeting.

New Corydon history

The Life and Times of New Corydon 1900-1913 will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. at The Star Theatre in Geneva.

The program will be a presentation of photographs taken by Charles Reed that will show how daily life was in New Corydon. There are more than 800 glass slides showing oil wells, swimming in the quarry, the barber shop and more.

Tickets are available in advance for $5 at Briggs Hardware in Geneva and at the door for $6.

The event is sponsored by the Star Theatre and the New Corydon Community Club. Proceeds will go to the restoration of the New Corydon School.
