JCHS/SAHS football

INDIANAPOLIS - The Patriots' effort last season has had a lasting impact, at least for a voter or two.

After winning its first sectional championship in 2007, Jay County High School picked up a few votes in the preseason poll released Monday by The Associated Press. South Adams, which finished 2-9 last season and hasn't had a winning campaign since 2001, also appeared in the inaugural AP poll of the season.

JCHS finished tied with Franklin County, which it will play in the third week of the regular season, for 22nd in the Class 4A voting with four points. The Patriots went 9-4 last season, falling one victory short of the school record.

South Adams picked up six poll points and tied for 19th in the Class A voting with North Central (Sullivan). Both of the Starfires' wins last year came against Southern Wells.

In Class 4A, Evansville Central, Hammond, Hobart, Zionsville and Olympic Athletic Conference teams Muncie Southside and Connersville each earned six points to finish in a tie for 16th ahead of JCHS. The Patriots play Southside, which they defeated in the sectional title game last season, and Connersville at home in back-to-back weeks Sept. 19 and 26.

Cathedral, which reached the semi-state round last season, topped the Class 4A poll with 266 points and four first-place votes.

Columbus East and Evansville Reitz each had six first-place votes, but trailed Cathedral with 254 points and 212 points respectively.

Bishop Dwenger, which finished the 2007 regular season No. 1 and defeated the Patriots in the regional championship game, was voted fifth. The Delta Eagles, who Jay County will play Friday night to open the season, is sixth with 100 poll points.

Four South Adams opponents appeared in the preseason polls, including a pair in the top 10. The Starfires open at Class 3A No. 10 Eastbrook Friday night, and will host Class A No. 10 Adams Central Sept. 26.

Heritage, which hosts SAHS Sept. 12 finished tied for 21st in the Class 3A voting. Southern Wells, which the Starfires play in the final game of the regular season, tied for 14th in the Class A voting.

Sheridan earned all 16 first-place votes in Class A and topped the poll with a perfect 320 points. No. 1 teams in other classes were Carmel (5A), Chatard (3A) and Bishop Luers (2A).
