JCHS academic team to compete at state (04/18/08)

Taking Note

The Jay County High School Academic Team competed Tuesday in the Indiana Academic Super Bowl Competition at Richmond High School in conjunction with 80 other schools competing throughout the state in Class 1 competition and more than 300 schools competing in four different classes.

The math team won the competition in Richmond and is among the top eight teams who will compete at the state finals on Saturday, May 3, at Purdue University.

Members of the math team include captain Jacob Schmidt, Brandon Nickol and Ben Garringer, all seniors; and Amy Powell and Thomasina O'Conner, both juniors. The team is coached by Crystal Laux.

The science and fine arts teams finished second in Richmond. The science team consists of seniors Ben Garringer and Lee Haggenjos and juniors Stephanie Byrum, Derek Hughes and Matt Theurer. The coach is Dan Orr. The fine arts team consists of seniors Tyler Wolford, Rachel Powell and Chris Dickison and juniors Sarah Garringer and Amy Powell. The coach is Liz Lawson.

The interdisciplinary team finished third in Richmond and team members are seniors Ben Garringer, Ashley Theurer, Tyler Wolford, Lee Haggenjos and Jacob Schmidt; junior Sarah Garringer and sophomore Jake Omstead.

The English and social studies teams finished fourth in Richmond. The English team is made up of seniors Lee Haggenjos and Tyler Wolford and juniors Lauren Haggenjos and Sarah Garringer. The coach is Gary Tarr. Members of the social studies team are senior Ashley Theurer and sophomores Jake Omstead, Josh Roush and Dillon Corn. The coach is Dolphus Stephens.

Book signing

A book signing event will be held Tuesday, April 29, at 6 p.m. at Jay County Public Library for Dunkirk native John R. Anderson, author of "The Empowered Parent: how to parent without frustration, anger and guilt." Anderson is a licensed mental health counselor. Copies of the book will be available for $20.



Library programs

Cream Puff Cooking with Linda Frantz will be Tuesday, May 6, at 6:30 p.m. The program is for teens and adults and will include a $3 food fee. Registration is required.

Crochet Basics with Diana Clark will be Monday, May 12 and 19 at 7 p.m. for adults, teens and children accompanied by an adult. Bring a crochet hook and yarn. Registration is required.

Pet Care, Adoption and Dog Bite Prevention with Carol Stocker from the Jay County Humane Society will be Tuesday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m. for adults, teens and children accompanied by an adult.

Wood working club

A new club, Woody Wood Peckers Carvers Club, is being formed at Bear Creek Farms and will meet the second Saturday of the month at 1 p.m. in the guest house. Dues are $5 a month and carving tools will be needed. For more information, call Kitty at (614) 239-9688 or (206) 279-2915.

Karaoke contest

The Bear Creek Karaoke Kids Contest will be Saturday, May 24, at 1 p.m. in the Shower of Stars Theater. Participants must arrive by noon and have a completed entry form and a cassette or CD of the song begin sung by the participant. Items may be brought to the Bear Creek Farms office or mailed to Karaoke Kids Contest, 8339 North 400 East, Bryant, IN 47326.

Chris Keller of Portland is an archeologist intern at the Fort Recovery State Museum and is an advanced degree student in the school of Archeology at Ball State University.

She will present an informational session at the museum on Sunday, May, 4, at 1 p.m. to kick off the 2008 Fort Recovery State Museum season. Keller will share her knowledge of prehistoric Indian artifacts found in Indiana and Ohio, especially artifacts crafted from conch shells, which is the topic of her thesis.

Gourd group

The Ridgeville gourd group will meet Saturday, May 3, at the Old Lions Club Building in Ridgeville from 2 to 4 p.m.

Carolyn Armstroin will give a demonstration using oil pencils on gourds.

Supplies needed are Walnut Hollow oil pencils, graphite paper, eraser and a pattern.

Plant swap

Herb's Friends will host the 11th Annual Community Plant Swap on Saturday, May 3, from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Riverside Center in Decatur, 231 E. Monroe St. for anyone to bring potted plants.

Doors will open at 6 a.m. to set up displays at no charge and tables will be provided.

Book donations and volunteers are needed for the book sale at the Penn Township Building at the Pennville Park on Saturday, May 3, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 4, from noon until 3 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Pennville-Penn Township Public Library Programs. Artists wanted

Ouabache State Park, Bluffton, will host an art show on July 4, from noon until 4 p.m. in the Campview Shelter in the middle of Campground A.

The art show must reflect themes of nature and environmental conservation and is open to local artists. Entries may include paint, sculpture, photograph, jewelry, etc. Artists may also give a class or demonstration during the show.
