JCHS academic team to head to state

The Jay County Academic Team recently competed in Class 1 of the Indiana Academic Competitions for Excellence area competition at Richmond High School with the theme "An American Generation" focusing on the years 1964-1980.

The English team, made up of Audrey Franklin, Sarah Shrack, Megan Buschur, Jake Omstead and Ann Casey, are ranked third highest in the state and qualified for state competition to be held at Purdue University on Saturday, May 8. The team is coached by Dolphus Stephens.

The Fine Arts team, made up of Mitchel Dull, Hannah Lugar, Liza Haggenjos, Dillon Corn, Jake Sutton and Mort Garringer, tied for second place due to tiebreakers.

The Interdisciplinary team, made up of Tylor Smith, Dillon Corn, Nathaniel Imel and Audrey Franklin, place second due to tiebreakers.

The Math team, made up of Tylor Smith, Derek Hughes, Nathaniel Imel, Ravi Patel and Mariah Clark, placed third. The coach is Crystal Laux.

The Science team, made up of Derek Hughes, Nathaniel Imel, Cory Harris, Audrey Franklin and Matt Shrack, also took third place. The coach is Connie Aker.

The Social Studies team, made up of Dillon Corn, Cory Harris and Matt Shrack, took fourth place. The coach is Trina Sommers.

Library events

Several events are planned for May at Jay County Public Library.

An after school special will be held Friday, May 7, from 2:45 to 4 p.m. for kids in grades kindergarten through third grade. There will be treats, crafts and stories focusing on a greener way to live.

Mother Goose will make appearances at the library on held Friday, May 7, 14, 21 and 28 for Mother Goose and Me.

Story times will now be held throughout the year on Mondays. May story times are May 3, 10, 17 and 24 at 10 a.m. For suggestions on other story times call Linda at (260) 726-7890.

The book discussion group is reading "Philosopher's Apprentice" by Jamie Morrow in May. The book is about the ethics of genetic engineering. The group will meet Monday, May 17, at 7 p.m. at the library.

April students

West Jay Middle School named its Students of the Month for April.

In sixth grade was Rebecca Louck, the daughter of Kevin and Angie Louck.

In seventh grade was Mitch Bennett, the son of Tab and Tammy Bennett.

In eighth grade was Chelsea Tighe, the daughter of Kevin Tighe and Debbie Tighe.

Book sale

Book donations are now being accepted for the Pennville-Penn Township Public Library book sale on Saturday, May 1, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the library at 195 N. Union St. in Pennville.

New project

The Adams Public Library in Geneva is having an open house on Saturday, May 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. to view the Gene Stratton-Porter Digitization Project.
