Jay County roundup

Based on last season's result, the Patriots seemed to be a major underdog Thursday. That was not the case.

Jay County High School's girls soccer team needed just over six minutes to get on the board and shut out the visiting Norwell Knights 2-0.

"I'm beyond happy," said JCHS coach Abby Champ. "We lost to them 6-0 last year. ... We're excited."

After withstanding several Norwell shots in the opening minutes, the Patriots (2-2) pushed back at the other end of the field. Senior Loryn Horn's 25-yard shot from the right side ricocheted off the left post and across the front of the goal, where the Knights where unable to corral or clear it. That left he door open for junior Mallory Poole, who sent the ball to the left corner of the net for a 1-0 Jay County lead at the 33:59 mark of the opening half.

"That's been our goal," said Champ of the early strike. "We did that at Connersville ... and then again tonight.

"When we do that ... they get pumped up right away. ... It was very important."

Poole also scored for the Patriots in the second half after teammates pushed the ball up the right side of the field. She took a crossing pass at the top of the 18-yard box and converted the shot for the final margin.

JCHS finished with 14 shots, including six from Sammi Compton, four from Poole and three by Horn. Norwell had all of its 20 shots on goal turned away by Patriot goalie Mollie May.

Boys soccer rallies

OSSIAN - Brad Horn scored four times in the final 25 minutes Thursday to rally the Patriots to a 4-2 victory over the Norwell Knights.

Jay County trailed 1-0 at the half and fell behind by two when the Knights scored four minutes after the intermission. However, Horn caught fire beginning with a goal off of a Ben Brandt assist with 24 minutes left in the game.

Brandt and Aldo Castro assisted on the second Horn goal two minutes later, and then the senior added an unassisted score to put the Patriots in the lead. He recorded his final tally off of another Brandt assist with 15 minutes left in the game, and the JCHS defense held strong the rest of the way.

Horn, who had seven of the team's eight shots on goal, has scored 13 of its 16 goals this year. Adam Daniels finished with four saves.

The Patriots have won four straight since opening with a 4-0 loss to Muncie Central.

The junior varsity game finished in a 1-1 tie with Josh Priest scoring for JCHS and Aaron Stevens recording eight saves.
