JCHS blasts Archers

JCHS baseball

FORT WAYNE - A seven-run seventh inning allowed the Patriots to pull away for a win Monday over Fort Wayne South Side. To have a chance to see the Archers again, JCHS will have to defeat a state-ranked foe.

Jay County High School's baseball team defeated South Side 14-5 Monday. In the sectional draw this morning, the Patriots got Class 4A No. 5 Homestead as their opening-round opponent.

Billy Wellman hit two home runs Monday to lead the Patriots (8-8), who have won four straight. He drove in four runs with his two hits.

Freshman catcher Andrew Duke went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Mike Masters also had two hits. Trey Dunn, Colton Lombardo and Michael Daniels each scored twice.

Andy Haffner, Ty Huntsman and Phil Powell pitched for the Patriots in the win.

Jay County will play tournament host Homestead in the opening round of the sectional tournament Friday, May 29, at 4:30 p.m. The other opening-round game will pit Marion against Fort Wayne North Side Thursday, May 28, at 4:30 p.m.

The winners of the two opening-round games will play in the semifinals Saturday, May 30, at noon. Fort Wayne South Side and Huntington North will follow in the second semifinal game at 3 p.m.

The championship game will be Monday, June 1, at 5 p.m.

The Patriots do not play Homestead in the regular season. The teams met in the sectional title game last year, with Homestead taking a 4-0 win on a walk-off grand slam in the seventh inning.[[In-content Ad]]
