The Patriots girls are still perfect. The boys continue to show how much they've improved.
Seniors Amanda Johnson and Erika Hunt each won two events as the Jay County High School girls track team swept five events to improve to 6-0 with a 106-17 slaughter of the Mississinewa Indians. Junior Dexter Shreve won another three events and Brandon Reynard picked up two as the boys moved to .500 with a 96-27 triumph.
Johnson led one of the Patriot sweeps, cruising to victory in the 800-meter run in 2-minutes, 36 seconds with Leah Wellman second and Deidre Chenoweth third. She also won the 1,600 run in 6:07.3 with Leah Wellman five seconds behind as the runner-up.
Both of Hunt's victories paced sweeps as she won the 100 hurdles in 17.1 with Stephanie Wellman second and Brianne Wellman third. She took the 300 hurdles in 52.3 seconds followed by Brianne Wellman and Kim Braun.
In addition to her individual wins, Johnson also anchored a pair of relays. She joined Aly Miller, Leah Wellman and Erica Butcher for first place in the 4x800 event in 11:19.4, and teamed with Katie Butcher, Macey Gerber and Sarah Westgerdes to take the 4x400 with a time of 4:49.1.
Shreve turned in his third triple win in four meets this season as the boys team lifted its record to 3-3. He easily won all three of hits events, including a victory by nearly eight seconds in the 400 dash in 51.66.
The junior led a sweep of the long jump, winning at 19 feet, 10 inches, with Patrick Williams second and Garrett Krieg third. He and Derek Bartlett went one-two in the high jump, with Shreve posting a winning height of 6 feet.
Reynard once again owned the hurdles, pacing a sweep of the 300 event in 40.21 with Zach Cash second and Bartlett third.
He took first place in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.73.
Shreve and Reynard also teamed with Sean Hatzell and Patrick Johnson to take the 4x400 relay in 3:45.2. Reynard, Hatzell, Krieg and Lance Franklin were first in the 4x100 relay by nearly six seconds in 46.73.
Kaelee Keller and Jordan McMillan teamed to lead a solid sprint evening for the Jay County girls, with Keller winning the 100 dash at 13.9 and McMillan taking the 200 dash in 28.6. Sarah Mescher, who posted an identical time to Keller in the 100, was second in both events.
Keller, McMillan, Mescher and Lindsay Shannon teamed for a time of 54.3 to win the 4x100 relay.
Macey Gerber picked up her first career win, taking the 400 dash in front of Westgerdes and Katie Butcher.
Cara Garringer led another sweep in the shot put with a toss of 30 feet, 5½ inches, with Amy Alig and Kayla Clevenger second and third. Lindsey Current cleared the bar at five feet to win the high jump with McMillan in second place.
In addition to his pair of relay victories, Hatzell took the boys 200 dash in 24.57 with Patrick Williams and Krieg completing the sweep. Johnson took the 800 run in 2:18.52 with Brady Mills second, and Franklin tossed 43 feet, 4¼ inches to win the shot put with teammate Mitchell Martyne as the runner-up.
Williams edged Hatzell by just over a tenth of a second to take the 100 dash at 11.82, and Baxter Holdcroft was first in the discus at 116 feet, 0 inches with Franklin less than two feet behind in second place.
