JCHS defeats Archers

FORT WAYNE — With the sectional draw just a few days away, the Patriots put together a strong day against a sectional opponent.
Jay County High School’s baseball team scored a couple of one-run wins over the Fort Wayne South Side Archers — 7-6 and 1-0 — in a doubleheader Saturday. The sectional draw will be released Tuesday.
The Patriots (12-10) trailed 3-0 in the opener, but scored six times in the top of the fourth inning and held on for the win. They scored the only run of the second game in the sixth inning to support a three-hit shutout from pitcher Jason Houston.
Houston led the JCHS offense in the first game-going 3-for-4 with a run. Alex Dunn singled and scored the lone run for the Patriots in game two on an RBI from Tanner Reynolds.
Landry Inman tossed four innings of relief for the game-one win.

Boys golf sixth
NEW CASTLE — Jay County turned in a sixth-place finish Saturday at the 11-team New Castle Invitational.
The Patriots scored 353 to finish in a tie with the Shenandoah Raiders. They were eight strokes ahead of the eighth-place New Castle junior varsity team and four strokes behind sectional rival Marion.
Connersville posted a 314 to win the event by four strokes over Madison.
Evan Mathias, a junior, paced Jay County as he finished with an 80. Mitchel Rigby also broke 90 as he finished with an 87.
Austin Wendel followed with a 92, and Adam Alfont completed the team score with a 94.
Zach Fullenkamp shot 103.

Softball loses two
YORKTOWN — The Patriots couldn’t slow down the Yorktown Tigers Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader 11-7 and 8-0.
The opening game was tied at 4-4 before Yorktown took control with a six-run third inning. The Tigers scored three times in the opening frame of the second game on the way to the three-hit shutout win.
Abbey Vance suffered the game-one loss, giving up 10 runs — nine earned — on 11 hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings.
Larissa Boles took the defeat in the second game as she gave up eight runs, half of which were earned — on seven hits and two walks in six innings.
Catherine Dunn was 4-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs in the opener for the Patriots (11-10). Katlin Petro, Rachelle Jackson and Boles each had a hit in game two.

JV boys track fifth
HUNTINGTON — Jay County’s boys track team got a strong effort in the throwing events Saturday as it finished fourth out of five teams at the Huntington North freshman/sophomore invitational.
The Patriots scored 110 points to finish ahead of Marion at the meet. The host Vikings scored 218 points to win the meet.
Wil Watson won the discus for JCHS with a toss of 117 feet, 1 inch. Nick Lairson of the Patriots followed at 107 feet, 8 inches, to finish second.
Travis Osterholt took the top spot in the shot put at 37 feet even. Jalen Ryder added a victory in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 53 seconds.

JV baseball falls
The Patriot junior varsity baseball team suffered a pair of five-inning losses Saturday — 16-6 and 15-0 — to the visiting Norwell Knights.
Jay County (7-13) never led in the opener as the Knights took control with a five-run second inning. Norwell scored at least two runs in every inning in game two while the Patriots went hitless.
Nate Brackman suffered the game-one defeat, giving up eight runs — six earned — on five hits and four walks in two innings. Lucas Hendee allowed 11 runs — 10 earned — on seven hits and four walks in four innings to take the loss in game two.
Levi Stant paced JCHS in the opener by going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs.
Austin Beasley added two hits and a run, and Chaz Carroll had a hit and two runs.[[In-content Ad]]
