JCHS earns 2nd win

MUNCIE — Resilient play in doubles matches lifted the Patriots past a former conference rival.
Jay County High School’s girls tennis team picked up its second win of the season Saturday 3-2 over the Connersville Spartans thanks to a pair of three-set victories in doubles action. The Patriots dropped their opening match of the day 3-2 to the host Muncie Southside Rebels.
Faith Parr and Emily Westgerdes dominated their opening set at No. 2 doubles for the Patriots (2-8) against Carlie Tinch and Brittany Gabbard of Connersville, but dropped the second set before rallying for a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win. Sydney Bost and Shawna Miller bounced back from an opening set loss at No. 1 singles to knock off Jenna Nobbe and Caitlin Boggs 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
Brooke Fraley picked up the other win against the Spartans by a 6-3, 6-1 score over Emily Fox at No. 3 singles.
Bost and Miller also won 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) against Southside, and Fraley turned in a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Baseball loses two
PERU — The Patriots couldn’t keep Peru off the scoreboard this weekend as they lost 10-3 Friday and 9-8 Saturday to the Tigers.
Jay County had an 8-0 lead Saturday before giving up eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Peru scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.
The Tigers took control Friday with five runs in the second inning.
Keenan James went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and a run in Saturday’s game. Zach Pryor and Chandler Jacks each added two hits and a run, and Landry Inman had a hit and two runs.
Jason Houston had a double and a run on Friday. Toby McCallister and Wes Hibbard added one hit and one run apiece.

Girls track wins
HARTFORD CITY — Katie Snyder swept the sprints Friday to lead Jay County to a 158-point effort for a first-place finish at the five-team Blackford Invitational. The Patriot boys were second out of five teams.
Snyder won the 100-meter dash in 12.53 seconds with teammate Tasya Smith in second place. She was the only runner to break the 27-second mark in the 200 dash with a time of 26.9, and she anchored the Patriots’ win in the 4x100 relay.
Amber Huelskamp took the 800 run in 2 minutes, 26.8 seconds, Malarie Houck was first in the 300 hurdles in 50.35 and Ciera Barcus won the high jump at 5 feet, 1 inch.
Zane Shreve won the 110 hurdles in 15.41 and the 300 hurdles in 42.2 to lead the boys team. Dylan Cope took the 800 run in 2:04.5, and Tyler Back was first in the shot put at 52 feet, 4 inches.

Teagle honored
MUNCIE — Craig Teagle of Jay County has been chosen as the high school boys basketball 2012-13 Ball State University Alumnus Coach of the Year.
The award was announced Friday, and Teagle will be presented with a plaque later this year.
Teagle, who has a career record of 295-175 overall and 219-122 at JCHS, led the Patriots to a 20-3 mark this year as they broke the school record for regular-season wins and tied the record for overall wins. Jay County finished second in the state in defensive average at 35.7 points per game, and second in average margin at 24.43.
The award is based on voting by other Ball State graduates who coach boys basketball.

Haines leads JV
NEW HAVEN — The Jay County junior varsity boys golf team posted a 427 as it competed Saturday at the New Haven Invitational. Bishop Dwenger won the tournament with a 306 while Carroll was second at 322.
Graham Haines was the only Patriot to break 100 at Whispering Creek Golf Club as he finished with a 95. Collin Saxman followed Haines with a 102.
Sok Vormohr shot 113, and Cody White rounded out the team score with a 116. Sid Pitman finished at 129.
