For just the second time this year, the Patriots played a one-run game. This time, they came out on top.

The South Adams Starfires scored the lead run in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday, but Class 3A No. 9 Jay County rallied back with two in the bottom for a 6-5 victory.

Josh Ludy had a double and a triple to lead the Patriots, who lost their only other one-run contest 6-5 Saturday to sectional rival Elwood. He drove in a run and scored twice.

Jay County (17-4) took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but fell behind when the Starfires scored four times in the sixth. The Patriots came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the frame en route to the extra-inning victory.

Tony McCowan, Luke Goetz and Rhett Retter each had two hits to follow Ludy. McCowan had a double, a run and an RBI, Goetz drove in a run and Retter scored once.

Michael Jobe earned the win as he struck out both batters he faced in relief. Andy Hughes started and struck out 11 in 71/3 innings.

Jordan Sharp suffered the defeat for South Adams, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks in 11/3 innings in relief of Daniel Bollenbacher. Only one of the four runs given up by Bollenbacher, who struck out eight, in the opening six innings was earned.

Jordan Steiner finished 3-for-4 for the Starfires with a double, two RBIs and a run. Kyle DeArmond's solo home run put SAHS ahead in the top of the eighth.

BERNE - Jay County trailed 11-10 heading into the final frame, but scored five times on the way to a 15-12 win.

After John Pettus was hit by a pitch to open the inning, a pair of bunts keyed the rally.

Colton Lombardo started with a bunt single, then Ben Vance laid down a sacrifice to more Lombardo and Pettus to second and third.

After two-run single by Willie Mayfield, Tyler Freyburgher put the game away with a two-run home run to complete his cycle. Mike Daniels walked and stole second and Phil Powell drove him in with a double to complete the five-run inning.

Freyburgher scored three times to go along with his 4-for-4 day at the plate. Mayfield also had hits in each of hits four at bats and scored three times, and Powell finished with a pair of doubles.

Ben Vance picked up the win in relief for the Patriots (14-3). Eric Homan started and struck out 10 in 51/3 innings.[[In-content Ad]]
