JCHS freshman class to have fundraiser
The freshman class at Jay County High School will have a fundraiser on Thursday, May 7, to help four organizations in the community.
After having read To Kill a Mockingbird, students wanted to do some activities that reinforce helping others and character skills.
Students will have a bowl-a-thon, dance-a-thon and walk-a-thon to raise money for Jay County Cancer Society, Jay County Humane Society, American Red Cross and JCHS-Gift of the Heart.
Top journalists
Two Jay County High School graduates were chosen as two of the best and brightest 100 student journalists in the country by UWIRE.
Alexis Hosier and James Brosher, who both attend Indiana University in Bloomington, were selected to the UWIRE 100 from 825 nominations submitted by professionals, professors and peers from 135 schools.
Alexis is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Hosier of Portland and James is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brosher of Dunkirk.
April students
West Jay Middle School recently chose its Students of the Month for April.
In sixth grade was Johnathan Blankenship, the son of Jonathan and Tish Blankenship.
In seventh grade was Jordan Wood, the son of Jack and Teresa Wood.
In eighth grade was Jordan Vaughn, the daughter of Jodi Curts.
Dean's list
These Jay County students were named to the dean's list at Ball State University for the fall semester of 2008.
From Bryant were Chase Ainsworth, Kevin Dirksen, Kyle Laux, Clint Muhlenkamp, Andrew Pinkerton, Stephanie Wendel and Vanessa Wilkins.
From Dunkirk were Brent Caldwell, Ryan Hornbaker and Krista Johns.
From Portland were Shalee Baker, Katie Broering, Kristin Brown, Kathryn Bushman, Nicholas Ehrhart, Kristen Gibson, Megan Knittle, Briana Louth, Chadrick Miller, Jessica Morgan, Nicole Towell, Gordon Trammel, Tana Trammell, Michael Willmann and Tyler Wolford.
From Redkey were Amber Champ, Michael Hurt and Mason Shreve.
Nature Day
Limberlost Nature Day will be held in Geneva on Saturday, May 9.
Birding for Beginners, led by Morris Gevirtz of Ball State University, will be held at Loblolly Marsh Wetland Preserve from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Raptor Release will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Loblolly Marsh parking lot with Diana Shaffer of Wildlife Resqu Haus.
A Nature Program will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Close Encounters with Avians with Dwain Michael and Feathered Friend Fun Facts with Morris Gervirts will be featured.
