JCHS girls pick up 3rd win

Jay County roundup

HUNTINGTON — Less than a third of the way into the season, the Patriots have already matched their win total from a year ago.
Freshman Catherine Dunn scored twice to lead the Jay County High School girls soccer team to a 4-0 victory Tuesday over the Huntington North Vikings. The win boosted the Patriots, who were 3-10-3 last season, to 3-2 on the year.
Dunn’s first goal of the game came with 1:19 left in the first half, and she also scored their final goal in a one-on-one situation against goalie Adrienne Peacock with just over 15 minutes left in the game.
LeAnn Horn tallied the Patriots’ first goal 15 minutes into the game. A shot by the senior 10 minutes into the second half deflected off the crossbar, and junior Sammi Compton’s follow-up shot gave JCHS a 3-0 lead.
Goalie Mollie May recorded four saves for her second shutout of the season.

Golf team splits
WINCHESTER — Jay County came away with a split result in a three-team match Tuesday at Winchester Golf Club. The Patriots posted a 198 to finish ahead of the Greenville Green Wave (201) but behind the Winchester Golden Falcons (163).
Brittany Stevens had a par on the 118-yard, par-3 second hole on the Pony nine at WGC on the way to leading JCHS (5-4) with a 45.
Jill Morrison of Winchester earned medalist honors with a 38, and Jenn Murray carded the top score for Greenville at 46.
Alysia Fennig followed Stevens for the Patriots with one par for a 47, and Katlin Petro and Madison McCormick each shot 53. Whitney Gray had a 58, and Cortney Myers finished with a 64.

Boys soccer ties again
CONNERSVILLE — The Patriots, apparently, are fit to be tied.
Jay County finished in a deadlock Tuesday for the third time in five games this season, this time with a 2-2 final against the Connersville Spartans.
All of the scoring came in the first half, with Colton McCombs connecting on a shot from inside the 18-yard box. Aldo Castro tallied his goal on a free kick from about 20 yards out.
Austin Cowan finished with eight saves for the Patriots (1-1-3), who have also tied Muncie Central and Heritage this year.

Houck, Hemmelgarn score
Jay Houck and Ivan Hemmelgarn each scored touchdowns for the East Jay Middle School seventh grade football as it hosted Blackford and Richmond at the East Jay Jamboree.
Houck scored on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jason Schlosser against Blackford. Hemmelgarn turned in a 35-yard TD run against Richmond, and also had a two-point conversion.
Tyler Leonhard ran in a two-point conversion as well, and Brian Stancliffe came up with an interception.[[In-content Ad]]
