JCHS grads compete at Little State (04/21/07)

Collegiate Check-up

The Indiana Intercollegiate Little State Track and Field Championships had plenty of representation from Jay County.

Four former Patriots took part in the meet held at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, with Hanover's Joseph Vormohr scoring the top finish. Jill Roughia of the Huntington Foresters, Nicole VanSkyock of the Anderson Ravens and Alyssa Johnson of the Taylor Trojans also competed.

Vormohr, a 2006 JCHS graduate, had the best effort of the former Patriots in the shot put. He finished in ninth place at the 16-team meet with a toss of 45 feet, 41/2 inches.

He also finished 17th in the discus at 125 feet, 2 inches.

VanSkyock, who graduated from JCHS in 2004, had the next best finish for the Patriots as she was 14th in the 1,500-meter run at 5-minute, 5.34 seconds. Johnson finished the same race in 5:23.52 for 27th place.

A trio of former Jay County teammates battled in the 800 run, with Roughia placing 15th at 2:25.87. VanSkyock was less than two seconds behind in 18th with a time of 2:27.16, and Johnson finished 24th in 2:29.23.

Jay grads leading Ancilla

Chad Keen, Josh Shatto and Cory Locke, all Jay County graduates, have helped lead the Ancilla College baseball team to six straight victories.

Chad Keen, a 2005 graduate, earned his first victory of the season Wednesday. He pitched for the win in the first game of a double-header sweep of Indiana University Northwest, which the Chargers took 9-6.

In the second game against IUNW, which the Ancilla won 9-8, Locke (2006) ripped a pair of doubles as he finished with three hits and three RBIs. He also had a double in the opening game, and doubled April 13 in an 8-7 loss to Muskegon.

Josh Shatto (2006) pitched a two-hit shutout April 13 in a 7-0 Ancilla win over Henry Ford. He is now 3-2 on the year.

Williams, Sprunger meet

Jay County and South Adams graduates met when Bluffton University hosted Manchester College in a baseball double-header Tuesday.

Heath Williams (JCHS - 2004) had one hit in helping Manchester to a 13-4 victory. Tyler Sprunger (SAHS - 2004) tossed 12/3 innings of relief, giving up two runs on two hits.

On April 13, Williams keyed a four-run seventh inning to help Manchester to a 7-6 victory over Transylvania. The Spartans trailed 5-3 heading into the seventh, but with runners on first and second and one out Williams ripped an RBI single to center field. He later scored on a single by Matt Talarico as Manchester took the lead for good.

Williams went 2-for-4 with a run in Manchester's 19-6 loss to Transylvania Sunday. He was also 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the first half of the double-header against Bluffton, an 11-3 Manchester win, and had a hit and three runs in the Spartans' 24-5 beating in the opening game against Transylvania.

Sprunger also pitched in Bluffton's 9-4 loss April 13 against Rose-Hulman. He tossed three innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two.[[In-content Ad]]
