JCHS Latin Club takes 11th place (07/31/03)

Taking note

The Jay County High School Latin Club placed 11th at the National Junior Classical League Publicity Contest in San Antonio, Texas, Wednesday.

Approximately 1,700 students attended the convention from the U.S. and Canada. Jennifer Schwieterman is the Latin teacher and club sponsor.

Jay County compiled 6,273 points which were based on newspaper, radio and television articles and creative publicity that is submitted to the contest.

Along with Jay County, 11 other schools in Indiana placed in the top 30, giving Indiana the title of second place in the state contest.

BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

The Fort Recovery State Museum is celebrating the Ohio Bicentennial on Sunday, Aug. 10, from noon to 5 p.m. (Ohio time) with reduced admission tours of the museum, fort and log cabins. Tours will run every hour.

From 1:30-2:30 p.m., anyone wearing a tie is invited to reminisce about life in Fort Recovery as they were growing up.

Bob Hart and Harold Ranly will share their old photos of Fort Recovery and Ann McDaniel will present a genealogy program in the afternoon.

FORT FFA

The Fort Recovery FFA Agronomy Judging Team and Poultry Judging Team will travel to West Springfield, Mass., on Sept. 11 to compete in the Eastern States Exposition and Livestock Show, commonly known as the Big E Contest.

Both teams placed 2nd in the state contest, enabling them to continue on.

Agronomy teammembers, Beth Fortkamp, Beth Lennartz, Jackie Lennartz and Greg Reinhard will identify weeds, seeds and insects; make fertilizer and herbicide recommendations; identify crop and vegetable diseases, and classify different soil types.

Greg Brackman, Kyle Fortkamp, Jennifer Link and Mary Will — members of the poultry team — will grade interior and exterior egg quality; grade carcasses of chickens and turkeys; judge broilers and layers; and take an exam over the poultry industry.

GRADUATE

Chad E. Davis, Portland, recently received his master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

EXPOSITION

The Indiana Black Expo at Muncie will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Horizon Convention Center, Muncie.
