JCHS nears OAC crown (09/26/05)
JCHS boys soccer
Jay County’s boys tennis team forged a tie for the Olympic Athletic Conference title Thursday. The football team won the OAC outright Friday. Today could bring another conference celebration.
The Patriot boys soccer team put itself in position to win the OAC title as it defeated the Anderson Highland Scots 4-1 Saturday. It is now 7-5 overall and 2-0 in the OAC and will host Muncie Southside today at 4:30 p.m. with the conference crown on the line.
Jay County never trailed against Highland as its potent junior duo staked it to a 2-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game.
Luke McClung and Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman, who were in on all eight of the Patriots’ goals in their previous two games, teamed up for the first score at the 33:18 mark of the first half. McClung took a corner kick from the left side and put the ball right on Bruggeman’s foot, and Scooter knocked it home for the 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later McClung connected on what coach Alan Bailey called “the best shot all season” as he blasted a goal from 25 yards out.
The Scots managed to get within a goal as they scored with less than four minutes remaining in the opening half, but they didn’t stay that close for long. Vlady Bjelica pushed the Jay County lead back to two as he took kickoff to open the second half, dribbled straight through the defense and beat the Highland goalie one-on-one.
Bjelica assisted on the final Patriot goal, a score by Mason Shreve with just 4:45 to play.
Jay County was efficient on offense, scoring on four of its six shots on goal. McClung and Bruggeman each took a pair of shots.
Highland finished with seven shots as JCHS goalie Derek Mills came up with six saves.[[In-content Ad]]
