JCHS searched for drugs (9/28/04)
K-9s led through high school, parking lot
Dogs from several police agencies searched Jay County High School this morning, and drug residue, prescription drugs and chewing tobacco were found.
Ten officers and six K-9s from Hartford City, Montpelier, Winchester, Portland, Delaware County and Jay County searched school lockers and cars.
Jay County Sheriff Todd Penrod said drug residue was found on a backpack in a locker. He said someone had probably smoked marijuana near the backpack.
Two bottles of prescription drugs were found in another locker, but teacher Chris Krieg said they were prescribed to the student who uses that locker. A can of chewing tobacco also was found in the same locker. Penrod said the locker was searched because the dog smelled narcotics residue in the locker.
In the parking lot, the dogs found at least five vehicles which possibly contained drugs. Billy, the Jay County K-9, indicated to police that four cars parked in the same area had drugs in them.
Penrod said more information on what was found would be available this afternoon after the search was completed.
Before the search began, police hid marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine in various places throughout the school to test the dogs’ search abilities. Lockers, vending machines and locker rooms were checked by the dogs.[[In-content Ad]]
