There are high hopes for the Patriot gymnastics team. Monday night's opening dual meet of the season did nothing to diminish those thoughts.
The Jay County High School gymnasts put up the highest opening-meet team score in school history, defeating the visiting Heritage Patriots 96-76.8.
"We had a great night," said JCHS coach Kristin Millspaugh, whose team opened last season with an 89.95 and went on to win the sectional title. "There are a lot of girls who are going for some things that are going to be pretty amazing.
"The highest first-meet score that I can remember is a 94. I know the year that we broke the school record and scored 108 our first meet score was an 89.
"I had fun with them tonight. I felt like we were a complete team ... We were supportive of each other. We were good teammates for each other. ... For this team to have as much success as I think they could have, that is really important."
After spending her sophomore season on the diving board, where she won the sectional title, Nadlie Runyon anchored the team against Heritage. The junior, who was a sectional medalist in three events and the all-around as a freshman, won three events Monday and finished as the runner-up in the other.
The most impressive of her efforts came on the floor exercise, where she racked up a 9.35. Her wins on the vault and uneven bars came with scores of 8.8 and 7.95 respectively.
She was second on the balance beam with a 7.7 and won the all-around at 33.8.
"Nadlie's doing difficult things," said Millspaugh. "I don't think Nadlie probably feels like she had a good night, but I do. A lot of things that aren't consistent in practice, she hit, I thought, well tonight."
Kristen Ainsworth, a sophomore and the top returning scorer from last year's team, won the balance beam with an 8.2. The highlight of that routine was her back tuck.
She was also second to Runyon on the floor (8.7) and vault (8.6), and was the all-around runner-up with a 30.65.
"I think Kristin is doing something new in every single event," said Millspaugh, noting Ainsworth's Tsukahara on the vault and a completely new routine on the bars. "That was the first back tuck she'd done on beam with no spot. And she nailed it. That does huge things for confidence.
"I'm very impressed with the difficulty Kristin has added."
Junior Stormi Metcalf was the runner-up to Runyon on the bars with a 7.25 as Jay County finished first and second in every event. She was also third with a 7.15 on the beam.
Lindsay Moser was third on the floor with a 7.45, and also had the team's No. 3 score on the bars at 6.6. Lexie Rowles posted an 8.25 for the No. 3 score on the vault.
Kalene Winn was the only Heritage athlete to break Jay County's stronghold on the top three as she too was third on the vault at 8.35 and the bars at 6.9.
JCHS will travel to Marion Wednesday and compete in the Richmond Invitational Saturday before a showdown at home Monday against Carroll.
"That'll be big," said Millspaugh. "That's a Fort Wayne School that's been to state recently. ... I'm excited."

Cortney Myers won three of the four events for Jay County, which posted a team score of 69.3. Heritage did not have enough gymnasts for a full team score.
Myers' highest score came on the vault, where she posted a 7.75. She added a 5.25 for first place on the bars and a 5.0 to win the beam, and was also third on the floor (6.85).
Lyndee Evans earned the other win for JCHS, posting the team's third-highest score on the event overall with a 7.75.
"We had a couple freshmen on floor that really stood out tonight," said Millspaugh, who also got a second-place 7.6 from Shelby Pryor. "Lyndee Evans will just go for whatever you ask her to go for. That will take her a long way this season.
"She doesn't hold back. That's exciting for me to see."
Pryor was also second on the beam (4.95) and third on the bars (4.2). Lindsay Moser finished second on the vault (7.6).
Melynda Brackman was second on the bars (5.1), and Jessi Chittum placed third on the vault (7.25).[[In-content Ad]]
