JCHS students to attend Hoosier Boys State

Two Jay County High School students have been selected by American Legion Post No. 211 in Portland to attend Hoosier Boys State this summer at Trine University in Angola.
Nicholas Patterson and Mitchel Dull will attend the program from June 12 to 18 that teaches the theory, organization and practical application of the process of our democratic form of government.
Patterson is the son of John Patterson and Karin Patterson. He is a member of Judan Judo, National Honor Society, Academic Honors and has volunteered for several service clubs.
He is interested in politics and plans to major in political science and related fields.
Dull is the son of Tracy Stinson and Shane Stinson. He is a member of the fine arts and science academic teams and interdisciplinary team, JCL (Latin Club), student council, Key Club, Drama Club, Thespians, 4-H Cat Club, prom committee, is a drama lighting head and junior class vice-president.
He plans to attend Indiana University  to study education and astrophysics.

Outstanding
Jenna Valentine, a 2007 graduate of Jay County High School, was named the 2011 Outstanding Graduate for Academic Excellence at Indiana Tech’s School of Business Administration division of Human Resources in Fort Wayne.
She recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in human resource management and will be employed as human resources coordinator at Navistar, Inc. in Fort Wayne.
She is the daughter of Mark and Marianne Valentine, rural Portland.

Wins award
Carol Alexander, executive crochet editor of DRG in Berne, was awarded the Crochet Liberation Front’s 2011 Flamie Lifetime Achievement Award.
Alexander is editor of “Crochet” and “Crochet World” magazines, which are published by DRG. She joined DRG as an editor in 2002 and before that had worked for 15 years as a professional crochet designer. She is a member of the Crochet Guild of America and has served on the board of directors for several years.   

Dinner and a movie
The Adams Public Library in Geneva will host Dinner and a Movie on Friday in the Porter Room.
A free dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the movie “Yogi Bear” at 7 p.m.
The evening is partly funded by a grant from the Adams County Community Foundation. For reservations, call (260) 368-7270.
Book signing
Four authors, who have  published books celebrating the legacy of Gene Stratton-Porter and the Limberlost Swamp in some way, will have a book signing on Saturday at Limberlost State Historic Site in Geneva.
The signing will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and will include authors Scott Russell Sanders, Mary Obuchowski, Barbara Olenyik Morrow and Jeannine Poole. Each author will do a reading and answer questions.
