JCHS teacher's paper on display (05/06/08)

Taking Note

Benjamin J. Dues, a government and U.S. history teacher at Jay County High School, has written "Going to the Sources: The Jay School Corporation Is Formed."

The paper describes the reorganization of thirteen school corporations that existed in Jay County in 1959 and will be placed in the Indiana Room at Jay County Public Library.

Library events

"Learn to Crochet" will be held May 12 at Jay County Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Diana Clark will teach the class for adults, teens and children with a parent. Registration is required and participants need a crochet hook and yarn. To register, call the library at (260) 726-7890.

"Pet Adoption and Pet Care" will be held May 13 at Jay County Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Carol Stocker of the Jay County Humane Society will be the speaker. Registration is not required.

The book reading group will be reading "She Got Up Off the Couch: and other heroic acts from Mooreland, Indiana" by Haven Kimmel in May. The group will meet May 19 at 7 p.m. at the library to discuss the book. Call the library to register for the group.

MusicWorks

Registrations are being accepted for summer MusicWorks instruction at Arts Place in Portland for adults and students. Classes begin June 9 and continue through July 25.

State speakers

State of the Heart Hospice has speakers available to present information about hospice and the services the agency offers. Eight volunteers, as well as staff members, can make presentations to civic and community groups, local churches or schools. For more information, call (800) 417-7535.

Special program

"Positive Behavior Supports" will be presented by Ken Fredericksen, director of quality consumer services at Jay-Randolph Developmental Services, on Saturday, May 17.

The free presentation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Portland Lioins Civic Center, and is being held in cooperation with Jay-Randolph, Jay County School Corporation and Jay County Special Needs Parents.

Graduates

Several area residents recently received degrees from Indiana Wesleyan University during a ceremony at the main campus in Marion.

Receiving associate's degrees in business were Christopher Aker, Tamara Chrisman, Nancy Culy, Beth Fouch and Michelle Hersberger, all of Portland.

Receiving bachelor's degrees in business administration were Kathy Carpenter, Victoria Daniels, Tisha Gierhart, Brian Ison and Jeremiah Moore, all of Portland, and Cindy Cash, Pennville.

Katie Alberson, Portland, received a bachelor's degree in marketing.
