JCHS teams to compete

Taking note

Seven Jay County High School Robotics teams recently competed at Warren Central Vex Robotic Qualifying Event.

The team of Tyler South, Dan Bumbalough and Cody Pyle finished in first place.

The team of Josh Mills, Brian Ingram and Cameron Schlechty finished in third place. After having been in and out of first place during the event, engine trouble caused them to place third.

The team of Aaron Thomas, Jessica Carducci and Megan Buschur finished in fifth place.

The team of Hanna Lugar and Caleb Hummel and the team of Nathaniel Imel tied for seventh place.

The robotics team will have one robot in the Robotics Regional Event at Purdue University on Saturday.

Also three teams, Tyler South, Dan Bumbalough and Cody Pyle; Aaron Hudson, Derek Hughes, Nathaniel Imel and Caleb Hummel; and Josh Mills, Brian Ingram and Cameron Schlechty will compete in the VEX World Competition in Dallas on April 22, 23 and 24.

Citizen of Year

Local business owner and volunteer Tess Kaup was awarded the 2009 Citizen of the Year recently at the 30th annual awards banquet in Fort Recovery.

Tess and her husband Tom have owned Forget-Me-Not Florist for 26 years and the Purple Post for 11 years.

Tess is a member of the Fort Recovery Merchants Association, where she serves as secretary, and Fort Recovery Athletic Boosters.

She assisted in the downtown revitalization project, helped develop the visitors information center and assisted with building the crosses placed in Monument Park each Memorial Day.

She has also been active with Fort Recovery PTO; Fort Recovery Chamber of Commerce; and former Business and Professional Women's Club.

Also at the event, Cy LeFevre and Roger Lennartz were inducted in the Fort Recovery Hall of Fame.

LeFevre founded and managed Fort Recovery Equipment and JR Manufacturing, He also helped develop the industrial park by locating his business there.

Lennartz has served for 18 years with the Southwest Mercer Fire District, where he served as secretary, lieutenant, captain and is assistant fire chief.

Library events

The Book Reading Group at Jay County Public Library is reading "On Agate Hill" by Lee Smith.

The group will discuss the book at its next meeting on Monday, April 19, at 7 p.m. New members are welcome. For more information, call (260) 726-7890.

Story times in April will be Monday, April 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, April 6, 13, 20 and 27 at 1 p.m.

Mother Goose will be at the library on Friday, April 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 10:30 a.m. She will explore rhymes, music, fun and learning for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

An After School Special will be Friday, April 9, from 2:45 to 4 p.m. for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Kay Hayes will be the guest speaker for the Earth Day program.

Class for children

The National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture, Inc. will have a class for children age six and older during the 2010 Spring Cultural Arts Classes to be held March 27 and 28 at Jay County Fairgrounds.

Nita Norcross will teach about the Ojibwe people and will also do hands-on activities.
