JCHS ties record

With a double win Tuesday over the visiting Blackford Bruins and Southern Wells Raiders, the Jay County High School girls golf team tied the single-season school record for wins with 12. The Patriots posted a score of 190 on the way to matching the mark set by the 1990 squad.
Blackford was second with a 207, and Southern Wells shot a 220.
Abby Denney led JCHS (12-3) to the record as she opened with back-to-back pars on the back nine at PGC. She added pars on No. 14 and 18, and had two bogeys on the way to a 43.
Carly Foy led Blackford with a 47, and Sadie Herr shot 48 for the Raiders.
Macey Gerber had three pars in her round of 45 for the Patriots, and Cara Garringer added a 48. Brittany Stevens completed the team score with three bogeys for a 54, and Whitney Gray shot 62.

Jets top tennis
MONROE — The Jay County boys tennis team struggled to get much going against the host Adams Central Flying Jets Tuesday in a 5-0 defeat.
The closest match for the Patriots came at No. 2 doubles where Jordan McBride and Chance Fuller lost 6-1, 6-4 to Isaac Luginbill and Keaton Fiechter. At No. 1 doubles, Joe Imel and Drew Wood fell 6-1, 6-2 against Derek Roe and Ryan Colchin.
In singles action, Brad Leuthold lost 6-0, 6-0 to Nathan Barger at No. 1, Derek Smith fell 6-0, 6-2 to Kam Fiechty at No. 2 and Morton Garringer lost 6-2, 6-0 to Jon Weil at No. 3.
The JCHS junior varsity team lost 9-1 with the lone win coming from the team of Josh Lykins and Evan Mathias at No. 4 doubles.

Eagles blast W-D
GASTON — West Jay Middle School’s football teams got great special teams and defense as they cruised past the host Wes-Del Warriors Tuesday.
The eighth graders won 50-6, and the seventh grade team posted a 28-6 victory.
The Eagle eighth grade squad (4-0) scored four defensive or special teams touchdowns.
James Williams had a kickoff return of 70 yards and a punt return for 20, Nate Brackman came up with a 15-yard fumble return and Bryce Bantz had a 35-yard fumble return. Grant Alsip picked up 48 yards and two TDs on his two carries, and Jacob LeMaster also had a rushing touchdown.
Phillip Newsome returned a kickoff 60 yards and a punt 35 yards for the WJMS seventh graders (3-1). He ran nine times for 75 yards and a TD, and Joey Springer completed his only pass to Daniel Meranda for a 14-yard score.

Chiefs sweep WJ
The East Jay volleyball teams each scored victories Tuesday over visiting West Jay. The Chief eighth graders won a tightly-contested match 25-24, 25-21, the seventh grade team scored a 25-9, 25-9 victory and the sixth graders came out on top 25-9, 25-21.
Jessica Kerrigan led the EJMS eighth grade team (3-2) with 12 points, including five aces. Malarie Houck had six points and two assists.
The seventh grade squad (4-1) got 15 points, including eight aces, and a kill from Kylie Osborne. Ava Kunkler added eight points with four aces.
Gracie Runkle led the Chief sixth graders with 10 aces. Deanna Chenoweth notched eight aces, and Britlyn Dues totaled three kills.

EJ runners win
HARTFORD CITY — Emi Minnich and Jalen Ryder led the East Jay cross country teams to victory Tuesday. The girls team defeated host Blackford 22-35 while the boys team picked up a 22-39 win.
Minnich led a one-two finish for the Chief girls with a winning time of 13 minutes, 22 seconds. Megan Wellman was second in 13:28. Jalen Ryder also posted a victory for EJMS in the boys race.
Following Minnich and Wellman for the girls were Sophie Bader (fifth - 14:37), Kellie Fortkamp (sixth - 14:32) and Sydney Mathias (eighth - 15:08). Michael Denney was third for the boys team ahead of Tyler Wendel (fifth), Adam Jutte (sixth) and Bryan Schwieterman (seventh).

Gillespies take 1st
Don and Deanna Gillespie took the top spot in the Jay Community Center croquet tournament Saturday.
The Gillespies won the championship in a field of about 15 teams by knocking off defending champions Jack and Barb James. Carole Brigham and Charlotte Carlley placed third.[[In-content Ad]]
