JCHS unable to hold off Knights

A see-saw battle ended up with the Patriots on the wrong end of the scoreboard.
Jay County High School’s softball team had leads of 1-0, 4-3 and 6-4 Thursday, but couldn’t hold off the Northeastern Knights in a 7-6 loss.
The Patriots took the lead for the last time with two runs in the fourth inning, only to have Northeastern score twice in the top of the fifth to pull even. The Knights took the lead with a run in the seventh and held on for the win.
Larissa Boles suffered the loss, giving up seven runs — six earned — on 11 hits and a walk in seven innings. She struck out nine batters.
Boles hit a solo home run as she finished 2-for-4 at the plate for the Patriots, who fell to 12-11. Catherine Dunn doubled and drove in two runs, and Katlin Petro had two hits and a run.

Baseball falls 4-1
DECATUR — The host Bellmont Braves had as many runs as the Patriots did hits Thursday as they handed Jay County a 4-1 defeat.
Jason Houston suffered the loss for JCHS (12-11) as he allowed four runs — two earned — on eight hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings. Bellmont took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning and added two more in the sixth.
Houston paced the Patriot offense with two hits. Alex Dunn scored Jay County’s lone run in the third inning, and Kyle Selvey and Keenan James added one hit apiece.
JCHS will host the Patriot Invitational on Saturday before closing its regular season Monday with a visit to Bluffton.

JV baseball loses
Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team couldn’t keep up with the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets on Thursday as it fell 11-2.
Thomas Boozier started and took the loss as he gave up two runs on a hit and three walks in two innings. Nate Brackman, Andy Kohler, Austin Beasley and Levi Stant all pitched in relief.
Adams Central broke the game open with three runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth.
Mitchell Kunkler and Kohler each had a double and a run for the Patriots, who slipped to 8-13. Levi Stant added a double for Jay County’s only other hit.

Schwieterman leads
Renna Schwieterman powered Jay County REMC to an 11-2 victory Thursday over Portland Optimist in Portland Junior League Rookie softball. Brewster Electric defeated First Merchants Bank 13-4.
Schwieterman drove in three runs with an inside-the-park homer in the first inning and went on to finish 4-for-4 with four RBIs and a pair of runs. Haleigh Clayton added four hits, three runs and two RBIs for REMC.
Lenzie Earls paced Brewster with three hits, three RBIs and two runs. Katlyn Brown added three hits, three runs and two RBIs.
Abby Gillum went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run for First Merchants, and Madison Reier had two hits and two runs for Optimist.[[In-content Ad]]
