JCHS wins in tourney preview

The Patriots proved they can beat Muncie Central. Now they just have to do it again.
Behind goals from its two scoring leaders, the Jay County High School girls soccer team picked up a 2-0 win Thursday over the Muncie Central Bearcats. The teams will meet again in the opening round of the sectional tournament at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Yorktown Sports Park.
The Patriots (8-6-1) needed less than four minutes to get on the board when Alex Loy took a shot off of a give-and-go with Sammi Compton. Loy’s try was deflected away, but Catherine Dunn was there with a follow-up shot for a 1-0 lead with 36:27 on the clock.
Gabbie Mann scored less than two minutes later on a shot to the left corner off of an assist from Mariah Bailey. Dunn, who took four shots on goal, and Mann each have 10 goals this year.
Brooke Reynard made six saves for the shutout.

Boys soccer wins
ANDERSON — Jay County’s boys soccer team picked up back-to-back wins for just the second time this year Thursday as it topped the host Liberty Christian Lions 2-1.
Junior Zane Shreve scored the game-winning goal for the Patriots, who defeated Muncie Southside 6-5 on Monday. He found the net in the second half on an assist from Alex Abbott.
Alex Dunn scored Jay County’s first half-goal, also off of an Abbott assist. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime.
Abbott paced the Patriots with nine shots on goal, and Dunn and Shreve each added three.
Kevin Scott made nine saves in 65 scoreless minutes in the net.

Freshmen fall
MUNCIE — The Patriot freshman football team led at halftime Thursday before falling 16-14 to the Muncie Southside Rebels.
Nick Lairson and Drew Huffman each scored touchdowns for Jay County, which was up 14-8 at the intermission. Michael Vanover added a two-point conversion.

WJ 8th now 4-0
UNION CITY — West Jay Middle School’s eighth grade football team stayed perfect Thursday with a 22-0 win over host West Side. The seventh graders won 16-6.
Justin Crouch tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Geesaman and also scored on a 10-yard run. Bowen May added a 70-yard TD run, and Spencer Calvert had two interceptions.
Cole Stigleman ran nine times for 50 yards and a touchdown for the Eagle seventh graders (2-0-2). Nathan Hamilton returned a fumble 50 yards for a TD, and Blake Stewart made four tackles.

Myers scores seven
Ethan Myers racked up seven touchdowns Thursday in the East Jay seventh grade football team’s 48-32 win over visiting Muncie Northside.
Myers racked up 198 yards and five touchdowns on the ground behind offensive linemen Scott Snyder, Sam Rector, Gavin Hare, Ben Antrim, Jacob Ferguson, Austin Clark and Ethan Theurer. He also caught four passes for 46 yards and two TDs.
Mitchell Frazier also scored a touchdown for the Chiefs (1-3-1), and Ferguson had two fumble recoveries.

Eagle spikers win
WINCHESTER — The West Jay eighth grade volleyball team rallied Thursday for a 24-25, 25-19, 15-11 win over host Driver. The sixth graders won, 25-22, 25-8.
Alli Campbell had nine service points to lead the eighth grade Eagles. Kaity Grady and Lillian Rogers each added eight.
Rhegan Shimp racked up 22 service points to power the sixth grade team. Kameron Edwards finished with four.

Craw leads runners
DUNKIRK — Tanner Craw led the West Jay boys cross country team Thursday as it hosted Union (34 points) and Liberty Christian (44). The Eagles did not have enough runners for a team score.
Craw paced WJMS as he finished in second place in 13 minutes, 27 seconds. Matthew Paquette was seventh in 15:33 followed by Ian McCombs (10th – 16:21) and John Paquette (13th – 16:59).

EJ sixth falls
GAS CITY — The East Jay sixth grade volleyball A team suffered an 11-25, 25-17, 15-8 loss Thursday to host R.J. Baskett. The B team fell 25-24, 25-19.
Maggie Pryor finished with nine service points and three aces to lead the A team. Kailee Denney added six service points and three aces.
Cassie McCowan had six service points for the B team.
