JCPL to offer writing workshop (03/01/06)

The Jay County Public Library, in conjunction with the annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, will hold a writing workshop on Friday from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.
The workshop, for children in kindergarten through third grade, will cover the rules and requirements of the Reading Rainbow contests, allow children to brainstorm ideas, give examples of the different types of illustrations and have questions answered.

First Aid class
The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering a Community First Aid and Safety class on Saturday at Jay County Public Library.
The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the cost is $45. For more information or to register, call (260) 726-9530.
Survivor scholarships
The American Cancer Society Great Lakes Division is offering $1,000 college scholarships to young cancer survivors. Survivors must be age 20 or younger, a resident of Indiana or Michigan and attend college or plan to attend college in Indiana or Michigan in the fall of 2006.
Applications are available online at www.cancer.org/scholarships or by calling (800) 723-0360. Applications are due by April 18.
Law scholarships
Applications are being accepted for the Glenn D. Peters Law Scholarship for law students in Jay and surrounding counties. Scholarships will be awarded on need, as well as past academic accomplishments and activities.
The applications are available at the office of Hinkle, Racster, Lopez and Clamme, 121 W. High Street in Portland. Applications are due by June 1.
Page program
Students may apply through U.S. Congressman Mike Pence’s office to become a page in the House of Representatives for the Summer 2006 Page Sessions.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old, have a grade point average of a B or better and will be a junior or have just finished their junior year.
The first summer session runs from June 12 through June 30 and the second session is from July 10 through July 28.
