JC's Vormohr, Star teams finish fourth (02/06/06)

JCHS/SAHS girls swimming

FORT WAYNE — The Jay County and South Adams girls swim seasons came to an end Saturday as the host Homestead Spartans dominated the sectional swimming finals.

Cori Vormohr of the Patriots had the top effort of the day for the two area schools, finishing fourth in a pair of events. The Starfires top effort was also a fourth-place result, in the 200 freestyle relay.

But the meet was controlled by No. 6 Homestead, which had three swimmers in the top six of every event and won by a landslide with 456 points. Norwell was a distant second with 196.

South Adams finished fifth with 104 points, and Jay County was seventh with 71 in the 11-team field. The winner of each event, as well as anyone reaching the state standard time, earned a spot in the state finals.

Vormohr broke her own school record in the 100-yard butterfly by more than a second, finishing in 1-minute, 2.27 seconds. She finished behind a trio from Homestead, including champion McKenzie Bagan (57.84 seconds), and was nearly three seconds short of the state standard time of 59.38 seconds.

The freshman also placed behind three Homestead swimmers in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.78.

Haleigh Lehman was in on each of the top efforts for South Adams. The team of Lehman, Jalisa Balsiger, Megan Myers and Jessica Sharp took fourth place in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.08.

Lehman also joined Myers, Courtney Hewitt and Lacy Rhoades for fifth in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:07.34. She teamed with Sharp, Margaret Beymer and Talitha Maven to place fifth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:05.31.

Sharp and Lehman were the lone Starfire individuals to compete in a championship race. Lehman was sixth in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.02, and Sharp took sixth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:52.57. Sharp was also seventh in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 2:09.62.

April Acker and Brittany Lewis finished eighth and 10th respectively in diving for Jay County. Acker scored a 259.85, and Lewis had 243.75 points.

Patriot senior Lindsey Vesperry capped her career by finishing 11th in the 100 freestyle (1:02.01) and 12th in the 50 freestyle (28.14).

Other top-12 efforts for South Adams came from Bethany Maven (seventh - 500 freestyle), Talitha Maven (eighth - 500 freestyle), Hewitt (ninth - 100 backstroke) and Beymer (12th - 100 freestyle).[[In-content Ad]]
