Jellison wins pair, JC now 13-1 (05/05/03)

Local Roundup

To say Josh Jellison is having an outstanding year would be an almost ridiculous understatement. The senior has been simply unstoppable.

The senior opened the day Saturday with a one-hit shutout of Muncie Southside, allowing the lone hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lose the no-hit bid in an 11-0 win. He followed in relief in the second game to pick up yet another win, tossing 11/3 innings in a 5-4 victory for the Jay County baseball team.

Jellison’s double-win day ran his season record to 8-0 with one save as the Class 3A No. 7 Patriots improved to 13-1 this year and 5-0 in the Olympic Athletic Conference. He has 67 strikeouts compared to just three walks in 452/3 innings, and carries a 0.77 ERA along with a 0.61 WHIP.

Jay County cruised through the first game, scoring three times in the third, fourth and sixth innings as Jellison stifled the Rebels’ bats. It scored two more times in the seventh for the final margin.

Mike Smith and Adam Homan each had just one hit apiece, but each finished with three RBIs. Cameron Hummel had two hits and two RBIs, and Chance Retter notched three hits.

The second contest was slightly more challenging, as Jay County fell behind by two after an early 1-0 lead. The Patriots scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game and twice in the sixth for a 5-3 lead.

Jellison allowed one unearned run in the top of the seventh, but held on for the victory. He gave up two unearned runs on two hits while striking out four in 22/3 innings.

Matt Champ started and allowed two unearned runs on three hits in 41/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Nick Timmerman finished with two hits and an RBI, and Trent Bailey had one hit and a pair of RBIs.

Jay County’s next game is at home Tuesday against Muncie Central at 4:30 p.m.
