JJCL earns award (12/02/2008)

Taking Note

The John Jay Center for Learning in Portland was mentioned in the November/December issue of Indiana Preservationist for receiving the Cook Cup by The Historic Landmarks Foundation at its annual preservation honors event.

John Jay executive director Rob Weaver accepted the cup that was given for Outstanding Restoration of an Indiana Landmark for rescuing and transforming the Weiler Building in Portland.

The first Cook Cup was awarded in 2007 to Bill, Gayle and Carl Cook for their 11-year partnership with the Historic Landmarks Foundation for rescuing a National Historic Landmark in West Baden Springs.

Open house

Jay County Public Library will host a Holiday Craft Open House on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. in the Community Room.

Preschool children and older, accompanied by an adult, can decorate sugar cookies and drink hot chocolate. There will also be holiday crafts to complete with instructions available.

Celebration of Lights

The Ridgeville Busy Homemaker's Club will have a Celebration of Lights on Saturday with lighting of the Christmas tree and the arrival of Santa at 6:15 p.m. Carols will be sung by Deerfield Elementary School children at 6:30 p.m. and there will be hot chocolate and cookies at 7 p.m. and "The Steps" Christmas program at 7:30 p.m.

A chili supper will from 4 to 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Ridgeville Volunteer Fire Department.

Graduates

Nyree Nichole Lewis, Portland, recently received and associate's degree in nursing from Excelsior College, located in Albany, N.Y.
