The John Jay Center For Learning and South Adams Machine Trades will be offering a 5-week introductory course including safety, shop math, manual and CNC machining. The course will include 80 hours of online training supported by text, audio voiceovers, video, photographs and illustrations. The course also includes 40 hours of hands on machining at South Adams Machines Trades in Berne.
The cost of the course is $700 and the class size is limited. The course will start July 6 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in room 104 at the John Jay Center.
Networking luncheon
The Jay County Chamber of Commerce will host a program called “Speed Networking” on Tuesday at noon at Jay County Hospital. The luncheon will cost $8. Reservations can be made by email at [email protected]
Those attending are encouraged to bring business cards, pamphlets or any other information they would like to share with other chamber members.
CRP offers announced
The United States Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency in Indiana announced that contracts for the General Conservation Reserve Program signup for fiscal year 2012 have been awarded.
More than 38,000 CRP offers were received on approximately 3.8 million acres nationwide this spring. USDA accepted 2.8 million acres bringing the total program enrollment to 29.9 million acres.
Jobs on the way?
Montpelier is working with a company to bring 70 jobs to Blackford County, possibly within the next six months.
Naturally Recycled Proteins received a land license from the Redevelopment Commission in Montpelier on Thursday, June 16, a step forward in its plans to build a facility on 27 acres in Montpelier Industrial Park.
Executive Director of the Blackford County Economic Development Corporation Rob Cleveland said that being granted the land license allowed NPR representatives to go out and prepare for its potential to build operating facilities on the site.
Employees receive award
Two employees at Educare Child Care Service Inc. have been awarded a Child Development Associated credential in recognition of outstanding work with young children.
The Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C., gave the awards to Amanda Esparza and Jennifer Myers.
The CDA is a nationally recognized credential given to those who work in early childhood education.
Plant to close
Franklin Electric Co., based in Bluffton, announced Monday it will close a plant in Oklahoma City and transfer the equivalent of 125 jobs to two other plants by this year’s end.
Most of its operations will shift to a facility in Linares, Mexico.
Community Center opens
The Towne Square Community Center opened its doors Monday on the first floor of the Towne Square Business Center, downtown Winchester.
Local investors gathered and said the center will prove to be a resource for the community.
The multipurpose center is available for rent and can accommodate 250 people for events like weddings, forums or family reunions.
Change approved
The Winchester City Council Monday unanimously approved changes on a local roadway that would allow Tomasco to expand and improve access to its loading docks.
Tomasco representative Eric Fields said increased production and shipping demands additional dock space, expanding the loading dock from four doors to six.
Comcast makes promise
Comcast Corp. announced that it’s planning to reduce the time customers have to wait for the cable repairman after a consumer website voted it “Worst Company in America.”
Comcast hopes to shorten its cable repair and installation windows two to four hours in all markets by 2012.
Purdue competing
LyoGo, a developer of drug-delivery devices based in the Purdue Research Park is competing against nine other entrepreneurial teams in an Ohio-based summer entrepreneurship competition.
