Johnson leads Patriots

YORKTOWN — Three runners in the top 11 helped the Patriots earn a third-place finish.
Jay County High School’s girls cross country team scored 76 points Saturday to finish third out of 17 teams at the Jim Leffler Invitational hosted by Yorktown. It trailed Pendleton Heights (45) and Norwell (62) as the top three teams combined to take nine of the top 11 places.
The Patriot boys were 13th out of 15 teams with 327 points. The host Tigers won by one point over Pendleton Heights with 80.
Junior Abigail Johnson led the JCHS girls in sixth place in 20 minutes, 19 seconds. Megan Wellman and Emi Minnich, both freshmen, were eighth and 11th respectively in 20:32 and 20:57.
Kaitlin Hemmelgarn finished in 21:41 for 23rd, and Kellie Fortkamp was 29th in 21:56.
Dylan Cope was the only Jay County boy to crack the top 70 as he finished 19th in 17:50, and Michael Denney broke the 20-minute mark with a career-best time of 19:59 for 74th. Mathew Cox also turned in a career-best time of 20:10 for 79th place ahead of Chaz Carroll (88th – 20:37) and Dustin Cope (92nd – 20:56).

Starfires rally
AUBURN — After playing 40 minutes of scoreless soccer, the South Adams girls soccer team broke through in the second half Saturday to earn a 2-0 victory over the host Lakewood Park Christian Panthers.
Sharon Balsiger took six shots on goal in the game for the Starfires and connected in the second half off of an assist from Samantha Sprunger. Riley Liechty, who took four shots on goal, got an assist from Rachel Simon for the other SAHS goal.
Simon matched Balsiger with six shots on goal.
Jordan Brown made two saves in the shutout.

SA boys place 5th
LIGIONIER — The South Adams boys cross country team placed fifth out of 22 squads with 167 points at Saturday’s West Noble Invitational. The girls team was ninth out of 21 teams with 298 points.
Brody Shane finished in 16 minutes, 56 seconds, to place 13th for the SAHS boys, who were without 2011 state qualifier Evan Liechty for the fourth straight meet because of an illness. Simon Sprunger was 25th in 17:27 followed by Sawyer Miller (29th – 17:34), Joel Hawbaker (32nd – 17:39) and Cody Sprunger (75th – 18:26).
Kristen Muselman finished in 21:04 for 21st place to lead the girls team. Aleesha Goodwin was 56th in 22:03 ahead of Lauren Klaehn (58th – 22:06), Lily Shane (89th – 23:11) and Allison Amstutz (93rd – 23:22).


EJ 8th goes 2-2
SELMA — The East Jay Middle School eighth grade volleyball team saw its undefeated streak come to an end Saturday as it went 2-2 at the Selma Invitational.
The Chief sixth and seventh grade teams each finished 1-3.
Lizzy Schoenlein totaled 32 assists, 22 service points, eight aces and five kills for the EJMS eighth graders, who are now 8-2. Abby Barcus scored 21 service points, and Britlyn Dues notched 19 kills.
Kaylee Inman finished with 17 service points, 11 aces and six kills for the seventh grade Chiefs. Alayna Aparicio had 14 service points and eight kills, and Katie Beougher added 11 service points and eight aces.
Hanna Dillon racked up 32 service points, including 17 aces, to lead the East Jay sixth graders. Maggie Pryor scored 17 points, and Hannah Phillips had 15.

Geesaman leads
Wyatt Geesaman led the Giants to victory Saturday in Jay County Pee Wee Football as every game ended in a shutout.
Geesaman scored all three touchdowns for the Giants in a 20-0 win over the Bears. Andrew Tony added a two-point conversion.
Hunter Mills tallied two TDs for the Chiefs in a 32-0 win over the Bengals, and Parker Grimes and Trey Castillo added one TD. The Steelers topped Union City 6-0 in double overtime, Monroe Central 1 beat the Colts 6-0 and Monroe Central 2 defeated the Dolphins 12-0.

Heiser finishes eighth
MONTPELIER — Jamie Heiser turned in the top finish among local drivers Saturday at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Heiser, of Fort Recovery, placed eighth in the Super Streets race. He was one spot ahead of Portland’s Richard Williams, and Jeff Baldauf, also of Portland, finished 12th.
Travis Nichols and Mark Runyon, both of Portland, were 18th and 20th respectively in the Thunder Cars event. Doug St. Myers of Redkey placed 18th in the UMP Modifieds race.[[In-content Ad]]
