Johnson leads Patriots to 4th (10/03/05)

The Patriot girls cross country team put together a solid showing as it hosted the Jay County Invitational Saturday, placing fourth among seven teams in the open division.

Jay County scored 93 points, finishing behind 15th-ranked Fort Wayne Snider (24), Fort Wayne Northrop (71) and Celina (88). Northeastern won the closed division with 47 points, finishing ahead of Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (65).

The Patriot boys were last out of six teams in the open division with 178 points while Celina (112) was fifth and Bloomington South won with 33. St. Henry took first in the closed division with 69 points, finishing just five ahead of Daleville.

Senior Alyssa Johnson was one of just three runners to crack Fort Wayne’s hold on the top 10, finishing sixth in the girls open race in 16-minutes, eight seconds.

Defending sectional champion Wendy Mahlan won the race in 15:17. She was followed by three straight runners from Snider, whose top five all finished eighth or better.

Amanda Johnson, a sophomore, followed her sister for the Patriots in 11th place. She crossed the finish line in 16:42.

Freshman Kylie Wellman and junior Jessica Mosier finished back-to-back. They were 22nd and 23rd in times of 17:29 and 17:45 respectively.

Cassie Laux completed the Jay County team score as she placed 31st in 19:08.

Freshman Brady Mills was first for the Jay County boys in 34th in 13:39. Josh Selvey finished one spot behind him in 35th with a time of 19:50.

Josh Hawn was 37th in 19:56, Josh Atkinson finished 38th in 20:10 and Travis Towell was 39th in 20:13.

Other runners for the Patriots were Kelly Weaver (32nd - 19:09) for the girls and Steven Kelly and Cory Mock, who tied for 40th in 20:15, for the boys. Robert Ralston was first among Jay County’s runners in the junior varsity race, placing 27th with a time of 20:29.

Star girls place fifth

The Starfire girls team finished fifth hosting the South Adams Invitational Saturday. It scored 149 points, finishing just seven behind Alexandria while Southern Wells won with 72 at the 11-team event.

South Adams’ boys team was 11th out of 13 teams with 234 points, 10 behind Rossville and five ahead of Tri. Southern Wells also won the boys race with 85.

Haleigh Lehman paced the South Adams girls in 10th place with a time of 16-minutes, 57 seconds while Nathan Rupp led the boys in 15th at 18:30.

The junior high Starfire girls placed first out of seven teams with 30 points thanks to Hannah Moore’s first place effort. Moore finished in 12:38 and was followed by Allison Beitler in third (12:59), Chelsey Nevil in seventh, Alexia Sparks in ninth and Jenna Smith in 10th.

Gabe Sprunger was the top finisher for the South Adams junior high boys, who did not have enough runners for a team score, placing sixth in 11:49.[[In-content Ad]]
