Johnson, Miller go back-to-back at Blackford (09/10/07)
JCHS cross country
HARTFORD CITY - The Patriots placed a pair of runners in the top five Saturday at the difficult Blackford Invitational.
Amanda Johnson and Alysha Miller powered the Jay County High School girls cross country team to a fourth-place finish in the open division at Blackford with 110 points in the 14-team meet.
No. 10 DeKalb was first with 32 followed by Huntington North (68) and Westfield (76).
DeKalb's ninth-ranked boys team also finished first out of 16 teams with 56 points. Huntington North (76) was second, and Jay County does not have enough runners to post a team score.
South Adams' boys were a solid sixth place in the 25-team closed division, and the Starfire girls were 10th out of 25 teams.
Amanda Johnson, who won the Oak Hill Invitational Tuesday, trailed two runners from DeKalb and finished in a near dead heat with Becca Goodman of Huntington North. They both posted times of 20-minutes, 31 seconds, and Johnson finished in fourth place.
Alysha Miller, a freshman, was right behind Johnson in fifth place at 20:32, beating out DeKalb's Samantha Anderson at the finish line.
Leah Wellman finished 25th for Jay County in 21:40, Kylie Wellman was 37th in 22:15 and Cassie Laux finished 41st in 22:52.
Allison Beitler led the South Adams girls team in fifth place with a time of 20:24. Nathan Rupp was 12th for the Starfire boys in 17:20, and Aaron Lehman finished 17th in 17:50.
Tevan Nichols placed 87th for the Jay County boys at 19:53. Branden Brinton was 106th, and Joe Imel finished 109th.
Also running for the JCHS girls team were Brittan Burris (45th - 23:06) and Katie Butcher (62nd - 23:56).
Logan Laux turned in the top finish for Jay County in the junior varsity girls race, placing 27th in 24:11. She was joined by Deidre Chenoweth (33rd - 24:40), Kristen Selvey (49th - 26:30) and Erica Butcher (51st - 26:48).[[In-content Ad]]
