Johnson, VanSkyock top field at Union City (09/22/03)

Saturday’s cross country result shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone. It was a welcome repeat for the Jay County cross country team of what it saw so many times last year.

Alyssa Johnson and Nicole VanSkyock teamed for a one-two finish, the sixth of their career as teammates, to lead the Patriot girls team to victory at the Union City Invitational. It was the first win of the year for the team as it finished with a score of 40.

Winchester was second with 62 points.

Jay County’s boys team was seventh in the nine-team event.

Johnson led an outstanding day for Jay County in which every runner had a personal-best time.

She cruised to a first-place finish in 15:20. VanSkyock was next, finishing in 15:40.

They were followed by the Patriots’ freshman duo of Allison Fullenkamp and Jessica Mosier.

Fullenkamp was eighth overall in 16:28, and Mosier took 14th in 17:06. Jill Roughia finished right behind in 15th in 17:12.

Also running for Jay County were Lindsey Vesperry (29th) in 18:13 and Vanessa Wilkins (35th) in 18:36.

Whitney Schemenaur was 10th in the junior varsity race in 20:25, and Andrea Collins placed 35th in 20:34.

Josh Atkinson and Nathan McClung were atop the list for the boys team, finishing 37th and 38th respectively. Atkinson crossed the line in 19:16, and McClung was four seconds back.

Josh Selvey was 50th in 20:08, Paul Imel paced 51st in 20:14 and Josh Hawn was 52nd in 20:37. Ian Shannon (54th) finished in 21:07.

The junior race had Doug Murray placing in the top 10 in 20:30. Josh Shatto ran a time of 21:42, and Lucas Smith ran in 22:53.

Jay County will run again Saturday in the Delta Invitational.

EJ girls 2nd at Selma

East Jay’s girls cross country team finished second at the Selma Invitational Saturday.

The Chiefs were eight points behind champion Yorktown with a score of 83. West Jay placed fifth with 148.

East Jay’s eighth grade boys were fourth with a score of 98, while Delta won with 78. Delta also won the seventh grade boys race with 29 while East Jay came in eight at 185.

Amanda Johnson won the girls race by a nose over Sara Miller of Delta. She finished in 11:43, three tenths of a second faster than Miller.

Amber Detro was fourth for the Chiefs in 12:18, and Kylee Wellman took fifth in 12:29. Cassandra Laux (13:56) was 33rd, and Brianne Wellman (14:23) was 38th.

West Jay’s Kelly Weaver placed 14th in 13:00, and Kristen Selvey was right behind in 15th in 13:08. Krystal Hutchens (13:42) placed 26th, Kayla Barber (14:27) was 40th and Brittany Burris (14:37) came in 48th.

Edwin Clott paced the eighth grade boys with a sixth-place finish in 11:00.

Cody Sutton was 16th in 11:46, and Leo Muhlenkamp was 19th in 12:08. Justin Moser placed 24th with a time of 12:31, and Josh Ludy was 33rd in 12:59.

Brady Mills had a fifth-place finish for West Jay in the seventh grade boys race in 11:25, but the Eagles did not have enough runners for a team score. Ty Fullenkamp (60th) ran in 13:53, Willie Mayfield (67th) finished in 14:27 and Spencer Pitman (76th) had a time of 15:24.

Steven Kelly led East Jay in 16th in 11:52. Joey Fraules was next in 27th in 12:28).

They were followed by David Darby (37th) in 12:49, Dan Muhlenkamp (45th) in 13:07 and Colt Martin (60th) in 13:53.[[In-content Ad]]
