Johnston, Patriots shine at Winchester (05/03/04)

Local Roundup

Pushed by some of the best teams in the state, the Jay County golfers put forth their best effort.

The Patriots posted at 315 Saturday to finish third at the Winchester Invitational. It was the best 18-hole score for the team this season, and surpassed last season’s sectional score by five strokes.

No. 3 Richmond won the event with a 300. Indianapolis Park Tudor — 25th in the most recent poll voting by the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association — was second at 301.

The rest of the field was well behind the top three, with the host Golden Falcons placing fourth with a 340.

Showing no signs of a back problem which bothered him earlier in the week, Tyler Johnston paced Jay County with a 73. It was the second best score of the day, two strokes back of Brian Maurer of Richmond. Park Tudor’s Brian Tempe was third with a 75.

Jesse Shawver had an outstanding day, posting a 77. Alex Hunt scored an 82, and Nathan McClung was right behind him with an 83 to complete the team score.

Adam Foster finished with an 87.

The Patriots — still undefeated in dual and triangular meets at 6-0 — will visit Bellmont Thursday to take on the Braves and the Bluffton Tigers at 4:30 p.m.

Jay wins drags

Jay County continued its racing success, winning the 12th Annual High School drags held this weekend at the Muncie Dragway.
