Jones will operate Shankers Bar and Grill (03/26/06)
Business roundup
Nick Jones, who managed Shankers Bar & Grill at Portland Golf Club in its opening season in 2005, is now leasing the restaurant, bar and banquet facility from club owners Dave and Roberta Puckett.
Jones, a graduate of The Ohio State University who has worked in the restaurant industry since 1995, will once again offer a full menu — including appetizers, sandwiches, steaks and pasta.
Jones’ specialty is pasta from scratch.
The restaurant will be open Tuesday through Friday evenings, 5 to 9 p.m., with longer hours for the bar.
Reservations are accepted but not required.
Several parties will be scheduled during the summer golf season — including a grand re-opening party on Saturday, April 1, with singer John Kirkwood performing. There will be no cover charge.
For more information, call Shankers at (260) 726-4610.
Changes name
A local not-for-profit mental health organization has changed its name.
Comprehensive Mental Health Services officially changed its name to Meridian Services Thursday.
The name was changed in an effort to thwart negative stereotypes associated with seeking help for a mental disorder. The mental health center provides care for residents in nine East Central Indiana counties.
Based in Muncie, Meridian Services has an outpatient facility in Portland.
AEP to conduct fly-overs
American Electric Power announced that it will conduct aerial visual inspections of high-voltage transmission lines by helicoptor in parts of Indiana, Ohio and Michigan during the next five weeks.
The patrols are scheduled to begin Monday, March 27 and conclude by the end of April, though weather could play a role in this time table.
The helicoptors generally make one pass over the powerline, hovering between 50 and 100 feet above the lines. Aerial patrols are performed 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Providing lesson plans
Take Charge America, Phoenix, has produced a series of lesson plans aimed at elementary school children to help them understand the basics of personal finance.
The plans are based on the premise that one reason Americans face rising debt is that they do not have sufficient financial knowledge, and that the best way to remedy this problem is to educate children at a young age.
These lesson plans can be downloaded for free at www.takechargeamerica.org/teachers/elementarylevellessonplans/.
For more information about these lesson plans call Mike Sullivan at 1-800-823-7396.
Ribbon cutting
Formula Powerboats of Decatur will hold a ribbon cutting March 31 to celebrate the completion of its 85,000-square-foot addition, which allows for increased production of larger boats and a new training facility.
The ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Thunderbird Products, 2200 W. Monroe St., Decatur.
Donations accepted
First Bank of Berne branches in Portland, Berne, Bluffton and Decatur will be collecting new items of clothing to donate through Eastern Europe Aid Association to orphans and street children in Romania.
Donations of coats, shoes, socks, boots, hats, scarves, gloves and mittens will be accepted at First Bank of Berne branches April 3 through April 18.
