Kahlig comes up 1 inch short

Local roundup

TROY, Ohio — Kylie Kahlig could not have come much closer to a state berth.
The Fort Recovery High School senior finished just an inch away from earning a trip to Columbus as she placed fifth in the shot put Wednesday in the first day of competition in the Division III track regional meet at Troy.
The top four athletes in each event earn a trip to the state finals.
Kahlig was in fifth place heading into the finals, and her fifth throw of the evening looked as if it might be enough to push her into the top four. But her distance of 35 feet, 11 inches, left her 1 inch behind fourth-place finisher Tammy Wannamacher. They had tied for third in Saturday’s district meet at Spencerville.
Kahlig also competed in the 400-meter dash preliminaries, but did not advance to Friday’s finals. She placed 13th with a time of 1 minute, 2.68 seconds.
Elle Sutter will compete in the 3,200 run at 6:40 p.m. Friday. She is seeded eighth.

Rigby’s season ends
MARION — Jay County’s Alyssa Rigby closed her career Tuesday as she suffered a shutout loss to Yorktown’s Kati Vasalakis in the IHSAA
girls tennis singles tournament at Marion.
Vasalakis will advance to the singles regional at Kokomo.
Rigby was undefeated in the sectional tournament at Jay County, cruising past Ashley Mink of Union City 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinal round. She outlasted Northeastern’s Maria Carson 7-6 (7-1), 2-6, 6-4 in the sectional championship in a marathon match that lasted nearly three hours.
After taking a year away from tennis in 2011, Rigby returned this season to help JCHS reach the sectional title match for the first time since 2006. She was also a member of the 2010 squad that went 10-8 for the Patriots’ first double-digit win season since the mid-1980s.
