Kahlig HR powers Tribe past Stars

BERNE — Elijah Kahlig hit a solo home run and Kent Retz kept the South Adams offense at bay Monday as the Fort Recovery baseball team beat the host Starfires, 5-2.
Fort Recovery (10-1) scored three runs in the third before South Adams (2-6) broke the shutout with a run in the home half of the fourth. The Tribe scored one run in the fifth and added one more insurance run in the seventh.
However, the Starfires threatened in the bottom of the seventh. South Adams had the bases loaded with two outs, but Jackson Hobbs entered the game in relief of Kent Retz to record the last out and get his first career save.
Mitch Stammen, Jacob Muhlenkamp, Derek Backs, Schroer and Kahlig all had hits for the Indians. Blake Boughman, Kahlig, Stammen and Muhlenkamp each drove in a run, and Stammen scored twice. Retz scattered five hits and gave up two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked three.
Chandler Ingle took the loss on the hill for South Adams, surrendering four earned runs on four hits while walking four and fanning five. Eric Pimentel pitched three innings of relief, striking out four and giving up Kahlig’s home run.
Collin Affolder, Skylar Schoch, Dakota Scherrer, Ingle and Pimentel had hits for the Stars.

Lions beat Starfires
LEO — Maddy Kloepper earned the only win for the South Adams tennis team in the 4-1 loss Monday to the host Leo Lions.
Kloepper defeated Olivia Roth in straight sets a No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Brittany Potts and Maddie Graber lost in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively. Potts fell to Haley Parker 6-2, 6-2, and Annya Mohlman beat Graber 7-5, 6-4.
The Starfires’ No. 1 doubles team of Kylea Pierce and Riley Leichty lost to Seven Wieland and Abbey Keeled 7-5, 6-4. Leo’s Lea Hughbanks and Ashton Heidenreich beat Erika Miller and Autumn VonGunten 6-1, 6-0.
South Adams’ junior varsity team lost all eight matches.

SA golfers second
FORT WAYNE — Derek Fox finished in a three-way tie for match medalist Monday as the South Adams boys golf team placed second out of four teams at McMillen Park Golf Course.
Fox shot a 36, leading the Starfires to a team score of 170. Heritage was first with 167 and Adams Central placed third with 185. Woodland had a score of 192 for fourth.
Cal Clouser shot a 39 to post the second best score for South Adams, which also got a round of 45 from Brad Green and a 50 from Jacob Rife.
Marcus Teeter shot a 55, but did not factor into the Starfires’ team score.

Saturday at the Brookwood Shootout at Whispering Creek Golf Club in New Haven, Clouser shot a 75 to earn match medalist honors as South Adams placed second with 348.
DeKalb won the eight-team tournament with a 328.
Fox also shot in the 70s for South Adams, posting the sixth-best score with a 77. Green (90) and Rife (104) also scored for the Starfires.

Stars win Lincoln Invite
CAMBRIDGE CITY — The South Adams baseball team was firing on all cylinders Saturday, racking up 28 hits over two games to win the Lincoln Invitational.
Chandler Ingle had three of the Stafires’ 15 hits and drove in three runs in an 11-3 win over the host Cambridge City Golden Eagles, and Dakota Scherrer was a perfect 4-for-4 in the 10-4 win over the Tri Titans.
South Adams led 6-0 before the Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Starfires scored three more in the sixth and two in the seventh for the win.
After the Stars scored three in the top half against Tri, the Titans answered with four of their own in the bottom half of the frame. They wouldn’t score again.
South Adams scored one run in each of the next three innings and two in both the fifth and seventh innings for the tournament title.
Skylar Schoch had five hits on the day, driving in two runs and scoring four times. Nick Busse had four hits and two RBIs. Jared Rife racked up three hits, Collin Affolder had two and Brandon Dailey had two RBIs on two hits and also scored twice.
Justin Nussbaum and Affolder got the wins on the mound for South Adams.

South Adams 5th at invite
KENDALLVILLE — South Adams’ girls tennis team tied for fifth Saturday at the East Noble Invitational.
The Starfires and the West Noble Chargers both had four points. The Concord Minutemen were first with 25 points, winning all five tournaments.
Maddie Graber led the Starfires, going 2-1 at No. 2 doubles before being replaced by Kara Seffernick in the third place match. Graber beat Anna Papaik of East Noble 6-3, 6-1 before losing to New Haven’s Hanna Cordes 1-6, 7-5, 10-6 in the semifinal. She then beat Anna Buttgen of West Noble in straight sets.
Brittany Potts went 1-2 at No. 1 singles, beating New Haven’s Taylor Erdly after losing to tournament champion Jenna Landis in straight sets. Potts then lost to East Noble’s Chelsea Ort in the third place match.
The No. 2 doubles team of Erika Miller and Autumn VonGunten also went 1-2 on the day, beating Bailey Kurger and Vanesa Ratliff of West Noble.[[In-content Ad]]
