Kahlig powers Fort Recovery

CONVOY, Ohio — Kylie Kahlig powered the Indians Thursday in her first meet of the season.
Kahlig won a pair of events for the Fort Recovery High School girls track team, leading the way to a victory as the Tribe scored 70 points to finish ahead of host Crestview (51) and Continental (39). The boys team, running without leader Aaron Vagedes, managed just 14 points in a third-place finish behind Crestview (112) and Continental (44).
After sitting out the first meet following the FRHS girls basketball team’s run to the state finals, Kahlig returned to dominate the shot put by more than two feet at 31 feet, 1 inch. She also took the top spot in the 200-meter dash in 27.9 seconds.
Holly Brunswick, also in her first meet, won the long jump at 14 feet, 11.5 inches. Also adding victories for the Indians were Kelsey Fiely (high jump – 4 feet, 6 inches), Jessica Vogel (1,600 run – 6:10) and Mikayla Westgerdes (discus – 95 feet, 9 ½ inches).
Michael Cotterman turned in a second-place effort for the boys team in the 110 hurdles in 19 seconds flat.

Tribe softball falls
The Fort Recovery softball team fell to 1-2 Thursday with a 9-7 loss to the host Ansonia Tigers.
The Indians trailed early, but grabbed a 5-3 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. However, Ansonia scored once in the bottom of the fourth and five times in the fifth to take control on the way to the win.
Andi Sutter took the loss, giving up nine runs — four earned — on nine hits in six innings. She struck out two batters and walked eight.
Sutter also had a pair of hits, including a double, and two runs. Olivia Thien drove in a pair of runs, Karissa Will and Taylor Guggenbiller each had two hits, and Malea Fullenkamp scored twice.
The junior varsity squad rolled to a 16-6 victory at home over Russia, putting the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Beca Tobe racked up three hits and three runs for the Indians, and Kendra Stammen, Sierra Loya, Kelsey Ontrop and Jackie Fullenkamp each had three hits and two runs. Tobe also picked up the win as just two of the six runs against her were earned.

FRMS track rolls
FORT RECOVERY — With nine different athletes each picking up victories Thursday, the Fort Recovery Middle School track teams cruised to a couple of wins.
The boys scored 84.83 points to finish ahead of New Knoxville (53.16) and Parkway (41). In the girls competition, the Indians had 99 points with Parkway (67) as the runner-up and New Knoxville (10) in third.
Tony Keller dominated the discus to lead the FRMS boys, winning by nearly 14 feet with a toss of 95 feet, 5 inches.
Adding victories for the boys team were Darien Sheffer (110-meter hurdles – 20.9 seconds), Gabe Muhlenkamp (800 run – 2 minutes, 51.3 seconds), Seth Riegel (200 dash – 28.6 seconds) and Sam Huelskamp (long jump – 11 feet, 11 inches).
Mariah Kinder edged teammate Chelsea Timmerman by one tenth of a second to take the 100 hurdles in 19.9. Other victories came from Rachel Pugh (200 hurdles – 36.3), Julie Wendel (long jump – 11 feet, 7 inches) and Haley Knapke (shot put – 27 feet, 7 inches).

Jay 4th ends season
The Jay County fourth grade AAU girls basketball team recently finished its season, during which it racked up a 53-5 record.
The squad finished as the state tournament runner-up, dropping the championship game by three points. Shelby Caldwell led the squad in scoring in the tournament, and was named to the all-state first team.
Other members of the team are Rhegan Shimp, Hannah Phillips, Maggie Pryor, Samantha Twigg, Avery West, Klarissa Hemmelgarn, Kailee Denney and Randi Ferguson.

Miles wins vault
Courtney Miles led a trio of area athletes who competed at a pair of gymnastics tournaments in February.
Miles turned in the best individual finish, winning the 9-11-year-old Level 7 vault with a 9.125 at the Walk of Fame meet in Fort Wayne. She was also third on the floor exercise (8.9) and balance beam (8.55), and third with a 33.975 in the all around.
Halle Hill placed second on both the 9-year-old Level 5 vault (8.95) and floor (8.9) on the way to a second-place all-around score of 34.85.
At the Feb. 26 Go Red Gymnastics Invitational in Indianapolis, Hill placed second on the vault again with an 8.9. Miles posted a 9.25 on the vault for sixth place, and Riley Leavell was 19th in the 9-year-old Level 5 all-around competition.[[In-content Ad]]
